It is on the edge of the Northumberland National Park, and lies on the bank of the river Coquet, at a location which was on the Coquet Stop Line, of which a pillbox remains. It is on the road between Rothbury and Otterburn. The village contains a Church, village hall and post office. Half a mile north-east of the village along the road to Rothbury are the ruins of Hepple Tower, a fourteenth-century tower house, which is listed by English Heritage as a building at risk.[2] A mile to the west, close to the country house of Holystone Grange, is Woodhouses Bastle, dated 1602 and restored and re-roofed in the twentieth century, a well-preserved bastle which may have been converted from a pele tower.[3] See also{{Portal|Northumberland}}References1. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.neighbourhood.statistics.gov.uk/dissemination/LeadKeyFigures.do?a=7&b=11124498&c=NE19+1AH&d=16&e=62&g=6452790&i=1001x1003x1032x1004&m=0&r=0&s=1435758180672&enc=1|title=Parish population 2011|accessdate=1 July 2015}} {{Northumberland}}{{River Coquet settlements}}2. ^Hepple Tower on the At Risk Register 3. ^Woodhouses Bastle 2 : Villages in Northumberland|Bastle houses |
