Hinksey Halt railway station was built by the Great Western Railway to serve New Hinksey, a suburb of Oxford.

History

The station was situated on the main Didcot to {{stnlnk|Oxford}} railway line, to the north of the site of Millstream Junction,{{sfn|Mitchell|Smith|2003a|loc=fig. 44}} the junction for the original terminus at Oxford (Grandpont), which was later a goods station but had closed by 1900.{{sfn|Mitchell|Smith|2003a|loc=fig. XI}} Access to Hinksey Halt was via Norreys Avenue and a footpath across the adjacent reservoir.{{sfn|Simpson|2001|p=61}} The reservoir was formerly a ballast pit, dug by the GWR between 1844 and 1848.{{sfn|MacDermot|1927|p=300}}

It was opened on 1 February 1908 along with four other halts on the route between Oxford and {{stnlnk|Wheatley}}.{{sfn|Butt|1995|p=121}}{{sfn|Mitchell|Smith|2003a|loc=fig. 44}}{{sfn|Mitchell|Smith|2003b|loc=fig. 28}}{{sfn|Waters|1986|p=128}}

Services were provided by steam railmotors based at Oxford, which was also the western terminus; the eastern terminus of these services was {{stnlnk|Wheatley}}, {{stnlnk|Thame}} or {{stnlnk|Princes Risborough}}.{{sfn|Waters|1986|p=30}} When the railmotor services were withdrawn on 22 March 1915, the halt closed.{{sfn|Butt|1995|p=121}}{{sfn|Mitchell|Smith|2003a|loc=fig. 44}}{{sfn|Mitchell|Smith|2003b|loc=fig. 28}}{{sfn|Waters|1986|pp=31,128}} The line remains open for passenger services between {{stnlnk|Reading}} and {{stnlnk|Oxford}}, but these do not call at Hinksey Halt.
