HMS Providence was a reciprocating engine-powered {{sclass-|Algerine|minesweeper}} built for the Royal Navy during the Second World War. She survived the war and was scrapped in 1958. Design and descriptionThe reciprocating group displaced {{convert|1010|-|1030|LT|t}} at standard load and {{convert|1305|-|1325|LT|t}} at deep load The ships measured {{convert|225|ft|m|1}} long overall with a beam of {{convert|35|ft|6|in|m|1}}. They had a draught of {{convert|12|ft|3|in|m|1}}. The ships' complement consisted of 85 officers and ratings.[1] The reciprocating ships had two vertical triple-expansion steam engines, each driving one shaft, using steam provided by two Admiralty three-drum boilers. The engines produced a total of {{convert|2400|ihp|lk=in}} and gave a maximum speed of {{convert|16.5|kn|lk=in}}. They carried a maximum of {{convert|660|LT|t|0}} of fuel oil that gave them a range of {{convert|5000|nmi|lk=in}} at {{convert|10|kn}}.[1] The Algerine class was armed with a QF {{Convert|4|in|mm|abbr=on|0}} Mk V anti-aircraft gun[2] and four twin-gun mounts for Oerlikon 20 mm cannon. The latter guns were in short supply when the first ships were being completed and they often got a proportion of single mounts. By 1944, single-barrel Bofors 40 mm mounts began replacing the twin 20 mm mounts on a one for one basis. All of the ships were fitted for four throwers and two rails for depth charges.[1] Construction and careerProvidence was ordered as {{HMCS|Forrest Hill}} in 1942, and laid down at the Toronto yards of Redfern Construction Ltd on 17 July 1943. She was renamed Providence in June 1943, and was launched on 27 October 1943.[3] Her conversion to a minesweeper was completed on 15 May 1944.[4] She served during the last years of the Second World War. After the war, Providence participated in the Palestine Patrol. On 1 November 1946, she escorted the listing merchant vessel {{SS|San Dimitrio}}, full of Jewish refugees, into Haifa.[5] On 10 December, Providence participated in the rescue of more refugees from the shipwrecked {{SS|Athina}}, which had grounded in Syrna.[6] Providence was subsequently sold for scrapping, and arrived at the yards of Young, of Sunderland on 17 May 1958.[7]References1. ^1 2 Lenton, p. 261 2. ^Chesneau, p. 65 3. ^{{cite web |url= http://www.warshipsww2.eu/shipsplus.php?language=&id=121085 |title= HMS Providence (J325) - Válečné lodě 1900-1950 |accessdate= 2008-08-09 |deadurl= yes |archiveurl= https://web.archive.org/web/20110720174223/http://www.warshipsww2.eu/shipsplus.php?language=&id=121085 |archivedate= 20 July 2011 |df= dmy-all }} 4. ^{{cite web |url= http://gb-navy-ww2.narod.ru/HTM-MS-algerine.html |title= Algerine Class |accessdate= 2008-08-09}} 5. ^{{cite book |title= The Royal Navy and the Palestine Patrol |last= Stewart |first= Ninian |authorlink= |coauthors= |year= 2002 |publisher= Routledge |location= |isbn= 0-7146-5210-5 |pages= 79|url= https://books.google.com/books?id=4VFhSqlVi9EC }} 6. ^{{cite web |url= http://www.nickmessinger.co.uk/providence.html |title= HMS Providence |accessdate= 2008-08-09}} 7. ^{{cite web |url= http://www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk/ex_canadian_us_algerina_class.htm |title= Ex Canadian US Algerina Class |accessdate= 2008-08-09}} Bibliography
