"Hungama Hai Kyon Barpa" is a popular ghazal, most prominently sung by Ghulam Ali.[1][2] It is written by Akbar Allahabadi and is composed in Raag Darbari Kanada. This ghazal was used for the first time in a Pakistani film Aap Ka Khadim, which was directed by Wazir Ali. Its music was composed by Khalil Ahmed and sung by Mehdi Hassan, but the lyrics were credited to Tasleem Fazli, the lyricist for the remainder of the songs in the film.[3] Later Ghulam Ali adopted it with same basic music composition and made it popular. {{citation needed|date=January 2013}}

Writer's historical and cultural context

Akbar Allahabadi's song is clearly about the pleasures of imbibing alcohol, it is claimed [4] that its genesis is in the social context of the British Raj in India, at a time when the Muslim League had begun to exert its independent approach to interacting with the British, against the wishes of the Congress. Some Muslims, including Akbar Allahabadi, hoped for Hindu-Muslim unity. This caused others to suggest that he had been given alcohol by the Hindus. (Muslims are forbidden to drink alcohol.) His ghazal was intended as a response to those insinuations.

Lyrics

Hungama Hai Kyon Barpa, Thodi Si Jo Pii Lii Hai
Daakaa Toh Nahin Daalaa Chori Toh Nahi Kii Hai
Us Mai Se Nahi Matlab, Dil Jis se Hai Begaanaa
Maqasudd Hai Us Mai Se Dil Hii Mein Jo Khinchati Hai
Suraj Mein Lage Dhabba Fitrat ke Karishme hain
But Hum ko Kahein Kaafir Allah Ki Marzi Hai
Naa Tajurbakaari Se Vaais Kii Ye Baatein Hai
Is Rang Ko Kyaa Jaane Puchho Toh Kabhi Pii Hai
Har Zarra Chamaktaa Hai Anwaar-e-Ilaahi Se
Har Saans Ye Kehati Hai Hum Hai To Khuda Bhi Hai
Vaa Dil Mein Ki Sadame Do Yaa Jee Mein Ke Sab Sah Lo
Unkaa Bhi Ajab Dil Hai Mera Bhi Ajab Jee Hai
