It is also known as the Iberian woodpecker.[3] It is sometimes considered as subspecies of the European green woodpecker. The species was first described by Howard Saunders in 1872 as Gecinus sharpei in an article in the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London. He named the species after his friend, the English zoologist Richard Bowdler Sharpe, who is credited for first discriminating it from the (European) green woodpecker (P. viridis) and Levaillant's woodpecker (P. vaillantii).[4] References1. ^{{IUCN|id=22725015 |title=Picus sharpei |assessor=BirdLife International |assessor-link=BirdLife International |version=2015 |year=2015 |accessdate=26 January 2016}} 2. ^Avibase.bsc-eoc.org 3. ^BIO diversity4all.org/ 4. ^{{cite journal | last = Saunders | first = Howard | author-link = Howard Saunders| title = On a new Species of Green Woodpecker from Southern Europe| date = 1872-02-06| journal = Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London| pp = 153/4| url = https://archive.org/details/ornithology00saun/page/n4 | accessdate = 2019-02-19 }} External links{{Commons category|Picus sharpei|position=left}}{{Taxonbar|from=Q5983847}}{{DEFAULTSORT:woodpecker, green, Iberian}}{{woodpecker-stub}} 4 : Picus (genus)|Birds of Southern Europe|Fauna of the Iberian Peninsula|Birds described in 1872 |
