Of Māori descent, he identified with the Nga Puhi iwi. He was born in Rawhiti, Northland, New Zealand.[1] He represented the Northern Maori electorate from 1884 to 1887, when he died.[2] A report suggests that he was accidentally poisoned by a dish containing tinned beef when dining in Auckland.[3][4] References1. ^{{DNZB|last=Oliver|first=Steven|id=2t30|title=Ihaka Te Tai Hakuene|accessdate=23 April 2017}} {{DEFAULTSORT:Hakuene, Ihaka}}{{NewZealand-politician-stub}}{{Māori-stub}}2. ^{{cite book |last= Wilson |first= James Oakley |title= New Zealand parliamentary record, 1840–1984 |edition= 4th |origyear= First ed. published 1913 |year= 1985 |publisher= V.R.
