IITH is known for its academic strength, research, publications and proximity to IT and industrial hubs. IITH was founded in 2008, among the eight young Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs)[2] It has 285 Undergraduate, 395 Masters and 474 Ph.D. students with 181 full-time faculty. In 2018, IIT Hyderabad was ranked 9th, among engineering institutes in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework and 22nd overall. The institute was placed under top ten institutes for three years, consecutively. History{{Main|History of Indian Institutes of Technology}}IITH established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India under the Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 2011. The Act was passed in the Lok Sabha on 24 March 2011[3] and by the Rajya Sabha on 30 April 2012.[4] It was set up in technical and financial assistance from Government of Japan. IIT Hyderabad began functioning on 18 August 2008 from a temporary campus in Ordnance Factory. In July 2015, it moved to its 576-acre permanent campus at Kandi, Sangareddy. It is close to outer ring road[5] and located on NH-65. AcademicsIIT Hyderabad offers Undergraduate B.Tech degrees in nine disciplines of Engineering, M.Tech degrees in eight disciplines of Engineering, postgraduate and Research degrees across all disciplines in Engineering, Sciences and Liberal Arts. At the institute, every semester, students have to pick a credit course in creative arts like introduction to carnatic or western classical music, theater, pottery and ceramics and Madhubani painting. It uses a Fractal Academic System, involving continuous evaluation of students, and more choices on subject they want to pursue outside their core area.[6] AdmissionAdmission to undergraduate programs is through the Joint Entrance Examination – Advanced for 285 seats.[7][8] Among all the IITs, IIT Kanpur and IIT Hyderabad had all their seats taken between 2013 and 2017.[9] Admission to M.Tech programs requires B.Tech./B.E. degree or equivalent in the respective or allied areas with exceptional academic record and possessing a Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) score. Admission to the M.Sc program requires B.Sc or an equivalent degree with 65% for GE/OBC, 60% for SC/ST or equivalent in the respective or allied areas with exceptional academic record and possessing a valid Joint Admission Test to M.Sc. (JAM) score. Admission to Ph.D Program requires either B.Tech/GATE qualification for engineering departments with good academic background or M.Tech/GATE qualification for engineering departments or National Eligibility Test (NET) qualification for Science departments. All qualified candidates with a valid Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED) score become eligible to apply for M.Des admission. In India, IIT Hyderabad was ranked 9th among engineering institutes by the National Institutional Ranking Framework in 2018 and 22 overall. CampusThe IITH campus is on a land area of 576 acre (234 hectare). The campus is designed by Pune-based acclaimed American architect, Prof. Christopher Charles Benninger. This organic campus is divided into clusters of buildings being completed in phases starting in 2011. The campus is one of India's best examples of energy efficient, carbon neutral and sustainable architecture. The design grew out of local weather conditions and utmost care to enhance learning. The graduate and post-graduate programmes are separated, student and teacher housing is divided, and girls and boys hostels are segregated for a pluralistic environment. The 25 lakh square feet of buildings in Phase 1A; 3 academic blocks and 10 functioning hostel buildings (each with a capacity of 200) were completed in July 2017.[10][11][12] HostelsThe hostel room is single-sharing (one person-one room). Most students at IIT Hyderabad reside in 9 hostels on the campus. Two hostel buildings accommodate girl students and women students. Dining facilities are provided in centralised halls. The students are assigned to hostels at the time of admission, where they usually spend their entire stay at the Institute. DepartmentsIIT Hyderabad has 15 engineering and science departments:[13] {{col-begin}}{{col-3}}
Research and industrial consultancyIIT Hyderabad has 110 laboratories on the campus, of which 50 are exclusively for research. Over 80% of the faculty either has one sponsored research or a consulting project. The academia and students with emphasis on innovation, with more than 1,500 research publications and patent disclosures, 300 sponsored/consultancy projects and 50 industry collaborations. It has allocated projects from industrial and government funding agencies. The project "Development of High-Energy Density Li-ion Batteries for Mobile Applications" entails developing electrode materials for Li-ion batteries and fabricating the batteries. ARCI, in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad, is embarking on a program to develop high-energy density batteries. IIT Hyderabad is involved in the DISANET project for disaster mitigation, an Indo-Japanese collaboration.[14] IIT Hyderabad has also been involved with India's first 5G patent [15] removing fluoride from water using naturally occurring Jamun seeds,[16] developing a constant drug delivery system for the body through skin patch[17] and other research projects. Inter-disciplinary centres
Incubation centreIIT Hyderabad has an incubation center in chip design. The center called as Fabless Chip Design Incubator Program, or FabCI, for fabless IC startups. Student activitiesELAN & ηvisionThe three-day annual techno-cultural festival, [https://elan.org.in/ ELAN & ηvision], started in 2009.[19] The fest takes place in the beginning of the year, in either January or February. IIT Hyderabad also hosted ηvision, an annual inter-institute technical festival, since 2011. Since 2017, both events have been merged into a single annual fest called ELAN & ηvision.[20][21] The Pronites are the star attractions of the fest that come alive on the 3 nights of ELAN & ηvision, drawing crowds of thousands to the IIT Hyderabad Campus. The previous editions of the fest have seen amazing shows by Shirley Setia, Benny Dayal,[22] Nikhil Chinapa,[23] Kailash Kher, Rave Radio and numerous other artists to name a few. With such massive participation, this fest also hold a social responsibility to give back to those who have been mistreated and outcast from society. Each year the fest promotes a Social Cause to bring awareness and bring about reforms. The 9th edition was graced by Vijay Deverakonda, the popular cinema actor, as he promoted our social cause campaign of an eco-friendly world.[24] ELAN & ηvision is a platform to showcase talents across multiple spectrums. With several spectacular events like FMI, Manthan, Elan-e-Jung, Breakfree, Quizzes, Robo Soccer, Enigma and Battlebots, the fest will be something to behold.
