It was established in 2002. Professor Amiya Kumar Bagchi, who was appointed as its first-Director, is now Professor Emeritus of the Institute. It is affiliated with the University of Calcutta. It is devoted to advanced academic research and informed policy advice in the areas of literacy, education, health, women, employment, technology, communication human sciences and economic development. Affiliation and coursesThis is an ICSSR research institute which conducts M. Phil. and Ph. D. courses in Development Studies[1] and short training programmes for research scholars.[2] The specialisations in M. Phil. are Economics, History, Political Science, Sociology and Regional Development.[3] LocationThe previous location of this Institute was Department of Museology, Laboratory Section, 5th floor, Alipore Campus, University of Calcutta and it had shifted to Salt Lake campus near City Centre. LibraryThe Institute's library started functioning in December 2002. It is now one of the leading libraries in India devoted to the economic and social sciences.
