It was named by Fernando Emilio Novas, Federico Lisandro Agnolín and Carlos Agustín Scanferla in 2010, and the type species is Intiornis inexpectatus. Intiornis was the size of a sparrow, thus representing the smallest enantiornithes known from South America.
