The Ipswich & Suffolk Youth Football League is a youth league system, which provides organised leagues for teams from Under 7 to Under 19 level, from the Suffolk area.

History

The competition was originally established in 1957 by David Routh and friends as the Ipswich Boys Combination. This league was small and limited to the Ipswich area, but it did produce some successful footballers, such as Brian Talbot and Jon Sammels.[1]

Under pressure to fall in line with The FA, the league formulated a set of League Rules in the late 1970s. There was an influx of new teams, and the league now became the Ipswich & District Sunday Youth Football League.

The league merged with the Suffolk & Essex Combination in order to include Mini Soccer for younger age groups as well as the 11-a-side divisions. It took the current name after that re-haul in June 2000.

League Structure

There were 17 divisions and 176 teams as of June 2008,[2] over the Under 7, Under 8, Under 9, Under 10, Under 11, Under 12, Under 13, Under 14, Under 15, Under 16, Under 17 and Under 19 age groups. Leagues for the ages groups of Under 10s to Under 16s are split into divisions, Division 1 or Division 2, while Under 7s through Under 9s squads are split between colours (such as 'Red', 'White', 'Blue' and 'Green').

Cup competitions

The finals of cup competitions are held at the Gainsborough Sports Centre in Ipswich.

The Open Cup is offered at all age groups, except from Under 8. The KO Cup is open to all sections, except from the Under 8 and Under 16 divisions. A Vase competition is held at each age level, apart from Under 8, Under 13 and Under 16.

Additionally, some teams are entered into the FA Minor Cup or the Tesco Cup.
