It opened in 2001 to commemorate the works of manga artist and author Shotaro Ishinomori, who was born in what would become the present day Ishinomaki City. It sits on the bay facing the Pacific Ocean and Tashirojima, a.k.a. "Manga Island". After the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, though still standing, the Ishinomori Manga Museum was closed for repairs before reopening on November 17, 2012.[1][2][3] The following year, they had a renewal ceremony that included actors Hiroshi Fujioka and Yuki Sato as well as singer Ichirou Mizuki, who have all been involved in works created by Ishinomori.[4] References1. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.rusal.ru/en/development/social_investment/mangattan.aspx |title=Reopening of Mangattan Museum in Japan |publisher=Rusal.ru |date= |accessdate=2014-04-22}} 2. ^{{cite web|url=http://comicsalliance.com/japan-shotaro-ishinomori-manga-museum-re-opens/ |title=Japan’s Ishinomori Manga Museum Re-opens After 20 Months Reconstruction |publisher=Comicsalliance.com |date=2012-12-04 |accessdate=2014-04-22 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20140408105315/http://comicsalliance.com/japan-shotaro-ishinomori-manga-museum-re-opens/ |archivedate=2014-04-08 |df= }} 3. ^{{cite web |url=http://ajw.asahi.com/article/cool_japan/fun_spots/AJ201211220043 |title=Fans flock to reopening of museum devoted to Shotaro Ishinomori - AJW by The Asahi Shimbun |publisher=Ajw.asahi.com |date= |accessdate=2014-04-22 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20130602080652/http://ajw.asahi.com/article/cool_japan/fun_spots/AJ201211220043 |archivedate=2013-06-02 |df= }} 4. ^{{cite web|url=http://pbv.or.jp/ishinomaki-psen/sub/13493/ |title=» 祝☆石ノ森萬画館リニューアルオープン ピースボートセンターいしのまき |publisher=Pbv.or.jp |date=2013-03-23 |accessdate=2014-04-22}} External links{{Commons category-inline|Mangattan Museum}}
