The National Statistical Service of the Republic of Armenia (ARMSTAT) reported its population as 271 in 2010,[2] up from 147 at the 2001 census.[3] It is home to the world's largest tissue factory.{{Citation needed|date=July 2011}} The place is named in honor of Nikoghayos Poghos Mikaelian (nom de guerre: Ishkhan), a resistance leader during the Armenian Genocide.
