It was one of four corps in the ARVN, and it oversaw the Mekong Delta region of the country. The Seventh Division based in Mỹ Tho was a part of the IV Corps, and due to the division's close proximity to the capital Saigon was a key factor in the success or failure of the various coup attempts in the nation's history. Before 1975 Fall of Saigon, the I, II, and III Corps were brutally invaded by PAVN and VC soldiers due to American government reducing military aids to South Vietnam. The IV Corps, however, was intact due to highly defended by aggressive ARVN soldiers. None of the provincial capitals in Mekong Delta were captured by VC. Major General Nguyen Khoa Nam was a well-known general that carried out strong military operations. On 30 April 1975, Major General Nguyen Khoa Nam, Brigadier Le Van Hung, and several number of ARVN soldiers disagreed surrender order from President Duong Van Minh. Brigadier General Le Van Hung and Major General Nguyen Khoa Nam committed suicide after decided not to continue resistance against VC due to poor defense around Can Tho and some regional districts.
