BiographyCypher was born in Wichita, Kansas to Dick and Betty (née Jackson) Cypher, and has an older sister named Melanie. She attended the University of Texas at Austin. {{citation needed|date=September 2018}} She married actor Lou Diamond Phillips in 1986. Two years later, she met Etheridge while assisting on the music video for the single "Bring Me Some Water", and split with Phillips in 1990 to start a relationship with Etheridge. Cypher directed the 1995 film Teresa's Tattoo, starring Phillips, C. Thomas Howell, and Kiefer Sutherland. {{citation needed|date=September 2018}} Personal lifeCypher was a gay rights advocate, and became famous for being one half of one of the first publicly lesbian celebrity couples.[1] In 1995 she and Etheridge appeared in a "We'd Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur" poster campaign for PETA.[2] During her partnership with Melissa Etheridge, Cypher gave birth to two children via artificial insemination: a daughter, Bailey Jean, born in February 1997, and a son, Beckett, born November 1998. Although initially reluctant to discuss it, the couple eventually revealed that the biological father of both children was musician David Crosby.[3][4] However, Cypher later told Etheridge in a 1999 therapy session that she was "not gay",[5] and the couple split in September 2000. Cypher went on to marry Matthew Hale in 2004.[6] References1. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.newsweek.com/1996/11/03/we-re-a-family-and-we-have-rights.html|title=We're a Family and We Have Rights|work=Newsweek|date=November 4, 1996|accessdate=June 30, 2014}} 2. ^{{citation|url=https://books.google.com/?id=AmMEAAAAMBAJ&lpg=PA70&dq=julie%20cypher%20PETA%20poster&pg=PA69#v=onepage&q=julie%20cypher%20PETA%20poster&f=false|title=My old flame|work=The Advocate|last=Ian|first=Janis|date=April 18, 1995|page=69}} 3. ^{{cite news|url=http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0305/24/pitn.00.html|title=Profiles of Melissa Etheridge, Margaret Cho|department=CNN People in the News|agency=CNN|date=May 24, 2003|accessdate=June 30, 2014}} Season and episode numbers unknown. 4. ^{{cite news|url=https://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/melissa-etheridge-engaged-20030416|title=Melissa Etheridge Engaged|work=Rolling Stone|date=April 16, 2003|accessdate=June 30, 2014}} 5. ^{{cite news|url=http://articles.latimes.com/2001/jun/20/news/cl-12517|title=A Pop Singer's Search for Domestic Harmony|newspaper=Los Angeles Times|date=June 20, 2001|accessdate=June 30, 2014}} 6. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.famoushookups.com/site/relationship_detail.php?name=Julie-Cypher&relid=12683&celebid=1918 | title = Famous Hookups - Julie Cypher |accessdate = September 2, 2018}} External links
