It is operated by JR Shikoku and has the station number "Y23".[1][2] LinesThe station is served by the JR Shikoku Yosan Line and is located 77.6 km from the beginning of the line at Takamatsu.[3] Yosan line local, Rapid Sunport, and Nanpū Relay services stop at the station.[2] The following JR Shikoku limited express services also stop at the station:[2]
LayoutThe station consists of an island and a side platform serving three tracks. The present station building, completed in 1975 is a {{Nihongo|hashigami|橋上}} structure where passenger facilities are located on a bridge which spans the tracks. Besides providing access to all the platforms, the enclosed bridge structure houses the ticket gates, a waiting room, shops, a JR ticket window (with a Midori no Madoguchi facility) and a JR Travel Centre (Warp Plaza).[3][4][5] A passing loop runs on the side of platform/track 1. In addition, a large freight yard is located just to the east of the station which is leased by a paper manufacturer.[6] Adjacent stations{{J-railservice start}}{{J-route|route=JR Limited Express Services|col=lightblue|f=b}}{{J-rserv|service=Shiokaze|previous={{STN|Kawanoe}}|next={{STN|Niihama}}}}{{J-rserv|service=Ishizuchi|previous={{STN|Kawanoe}}|next={{STN|Niihama}}}}{{J-rserv|service=Midnight Express Takamatsu|previous={{STN|Kawanoe}}|next={{STN|Niihama}}}}{{J-rserv|service=Morning Express Takamatsu|previous={{STN|Kawanoe}}|next={{STN|Niihama}}}}{{J-route|route=Yosan Line|col=orange|f=w}}{{J-rserv|service=Rapid Sunport|previous={{STN|Kawanoe}}|next={{STN|Iyo-Sangawa}}}}{{J-rserv|service=Nanpū Relay|previous={{STN|Kawanoe}}|next={{STN|Iyo-Sangawa}}}}{{J-rserv|service=Local|previous={{STN|Kawanoe}}|next={{STN|Iyo-Sangawa}}}}{{S-end}}HistoryThe station opened on 16 September 1917 as the terminus of the then Sanuki Line which had been extended westwards from {{STN|Kawanoe}}. It became a through-station on 1 September 1919 when the line was further extended to {{STN|Iyo-Doi}}. At that time the station was operated by Japanese Government Railways, later becoming Japanese National Railways (JNR). With the privatization of JNR on 1 April 1987, control of the station passed to JR Shikoku and JR Freight.[7][8] See also
