For most of its length the river flows through the Purus várzea ecoregion.[3] This is surrounded by the Juruá-Purus moist forests ecoregion.[4] It rises among the Ucayali highlands, and is navigable and unobstructed for a distance of {{convert|1133|mi|km}} above its junction with the Amazon. It has a total length of approximately {{convert|1500|mi|km}}, and is one of the longest tributaries of the Amazon. The {{convert|251577|ha}} Médio Juruá Extractive Reserve, created in 1997, is on the left bank of the river as it meanders in a generally northeast direction through the municipality of Carauari.[5] The lower Juruá River forms the western boundary of the {{convert|187982|ha}} Baixo Juruá Extractive Reserve, created in 2001.[6] Since 2018 the lower portion of the river in Brazil has been designated as a protected Ramsar site.[2] References1. ^{{cite book |last1=Ziesler |first1=R. |last2=Ardizzone |first2=G.D. |title=The Inland waters of Latin America |year=1979 |url=http://www.fao.org/docrep/008/ad770b/AD770B05.htm |publisher=Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations |isbn=92-5-000780-9 |chapter=Amazon River System |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20141108152358/http://www.fao.org/docrep/008/ad770b/AD770B05.htm |archivedate=8 November 2014 |deadurl=no}} {{DEFAULTSORT:Jurua River}}{{AmazonasBR-river-stub}}{{Ucayali-geo-stub}}{{Peru-river-stub}}2. ^1 {{Cite web|title=Rio Juruá|website=Ramsar Sites Information Service|url=https://rsis.ramsar.org/ris/2362|accessdate=11 January 2019}} 3. ^{{citation|ref={{harvid|Purus varzea – Myers}} |title=Purus varzea|publisher= Myers Enterprises II |work=Global Species |url=http://www.globalspecies.org/ecoregions/display/NT0156|accessdate=2017-03-15}} 4. ^{{citation |title=South America: Amazon Basin, northwestern Brazil (NT0133) |last=Sears|first=Robin |publisher=WWF: World Wildlife Fund |url=http://www.worldwildlife.org/ecoregions/nt0133|accessdate=2017-03-28}} 5. ^{{citation|ref={{harvid|RESEX do Médio Juruá – ISA}}|language=Portuguese |title=RESEX do Médio Juruá|publisher=ISA: Instituto Socioambiental |url=https://uc.socioambiental.org/uc/4526|accessdate=2016-06-16}} 6. ^{{citation|ref={{harvid|RESEX do Baixo Juruá – ISA}}|language=Portuguese |title=RESEX do Baixo Juruá|publisher=ISA: Instituto Socioambiental |url=https://uc.socioambiental.org/uc/1151|accessdate=2016-10-22}} 6 : Tributaries of the Amazon River|Rivers of Amazonas (Brazilian state)|Rivers of Peru|Rivers of Ucayali Region|International rivers of South America|Ramsar sites in Brazil |
