Jamie Mathiou is a former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1990s and 2000s. An Ireland international forward, he played for Australian clubs, the North Sydney Bears, and the North Queensland Cowboys, and for English club, the Leeds Rhinos.

Background

Mathiou was born in Queensland, Australia.

Playing career

While attending Kingscliff High School, Mathiou played for the Australian Schoolboys team in 1989.[2]

Mathiou played for the North Sydney Bears and the North Queensland Cowboys in Australia and Leeds Rhinos in the Super League.[3] His position of choice was as a {{rlp|pr}}.

Mathiou played 136 games for Leeds Rhino, starting 100 from the bench. He became the longest serving import for the Leeds Rhinos since the change of import rules in 1982.[4] He played for Leeds from the interchange bench in their 1998 Super League Grand Final loss to the Wigan Warriors.

Mathiou was an Ireland international and played at the 2000 Rugby League World Cup.[5]

Later years

After retiring from Leeds Rhinos, Mathiou played with and captained the Ipswich Jets in the Queensland Cup competition. Later he worked in recruitment for the Sydney Roosters for ten years.[6][7] He joined the Gold Coast Titans in 2015 as the recruitment manager, spending only a year at the club.[8]
