History
Janes Island State Park was created in 1963.[6] Between 1965 and 1978, the Maryland General Assembly authorized funding of $1 million for land acquisition and site improvements including beach erosion control measures and construction of camping and picnicking facilities.[7]
Activities and amenities
The park offers a boat launch, boat slips, and canoe and kayak rentals. Canoeing and kayaking trails lead paddlers to a 7-mile-long white sandy beach on the shores of Tangier Sound and Chesapeake Bay. The park also features a conference center, 100-site campground, rental cabins, fishing and crabbing.
There are 5 rustic mini cabins that sleep 3-4 people and have a small table with 2 chairs inside. Some of them have 2 sets of bunk beds and some have a full bed and a bunk bed. Outside they all have a small porch, picnic table, fire pit and water view. They are a short walk to the nearest bath house and you must bring your own sheets/blankets/pillows. You are not allowed to tent camp in the mini cabin area even if you are renting the mini cabin.
There are 4 full service log cabins that each sleep 6. Two bedrooms downstairs, 1 with a full size bed and the other with two twin beds. Upstairs has 2 twin beds. You must bring your own pillows/sheets/blankets/towels. Two of the cabins are loft style with a wooden ladder to access the upstairs and 2 of the cabins have regular stairs. They all have a kitchen with a bench style table. The kitchen is equipped with a refrigerator, oven,microwave, coffee maker and toaster, silverware, plates and cups. Bring your own paper products, dish washing liquid, etc. Each cabin has a gas powered fireplace inside that is usable in the winter months but not turned on during late spring summer and early fall months. All of the cabins have a screened in porch with a picnic table inside the porch and another picnic table outside by the fire pit and grill and there is a water view and a dock but boats/kayaks/canoes cannot be launched from or tied up to the dock. It is strictly for fishing, relaxing and enjoying the view. There is a marina for boat/kayak/canoe launching.
A lodge is available for larger groups or small events. It sleeps 16. Two first floor bedrooms with 2 sets of bunk beds in each room and a full bathroom between the 2 rooms. The 2nd floor has two bedrooms. They each have a queen bed and a bunk bed and they each have there own bathroom. There is also a powder room in the entrance hallway.
The 1st floor has an extra large living room with a wood burning fireplace and a very spacious kitchen and dining area with two large tables and ample seating. The kitchen has a large refrigerator and a large freezer, oven, dishwasher, microwave, toaster and a coffee maker.
The 2nd floor has a great room/hall with a wood burning fireplace and they offer use of tables and chairs if you are hosting an event. There are 2 large sliding doors that lead out to a 2nd floor deck with amazing water/marsh views and under the deck is a large ground level screened porch with two picnic tables inside. Outside is a large grill. A picnic table and a fire pit. There is a water view and a dock for fishing and relaxing but you cannot tie up or launch boats/kayaks/canoes from the dock. They offer a marina for that.
