Zhang Jie (born 20 December 1982) also known as Jason Zhang is a Chinese pop singer. Zhang was born in Chengdu, Sichuan, China. Zhang made his television series debut in the reality singing competition My Show in 2004 which he won. In 2005, he released his first album and won the Recommended annual media award for the signature song, Love Of The Plough.

In 2007, Zhang participated in Super Boy, which launched his career and made him popular with the public. In 2008, Zhang held his first personal concert. For the album, The Day After Tomorrow, he won Most Popular Male Singer. In 2010, Zhang released his 7th album, It's Love and owned his concert label. On November 28, he won Best Asian Artist in Mnet Asian Music Awards. In the same year, Zhang was invited to attend Boao Forum for Asia as the performing artist. In 2012, Zhang began his first live tour in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. In 2013, Zhang attended CCTV Spring Festival Gala for the first time. In August 2014, Zhang attended the opening ceremony of The 2nd Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing as one of the singers of the theme song. On November 24, Zhang won "Best International Artist" at the 46th American Music Awards.

In April 2016, Zhang set up his personal label, Planet Culture. In July, he started his world tour, Sound Of My Heart, the first stop being Beijing Workers' Stadium.

In August, Zhang became China film endorser of Star Trek Beyond and released the theme song, Lost In The Stars. On August 18, Zhang attended the film's premiere at Embarcadero Marina Park South. In November, Zhang released the promotion song of Allied, Give You My World.

In 2017, Zhang had a world tour to the US, Canada, Malaysia, Australia, Italy and the UK. In June , Zhang released China's theme song for The Last Knight,Torches.

By the end of May 2017, Zhang has recorded 12 albums and held 34 concerts. Zhang has won the Most Popular Male Singer Award 33 times and Best Male Singer 12 times.

Biography

1982–2003: Early life

Zhang was born on the 20th of December, 1982, in Chengdu, Sichuan.

In 2000, Zhang was admitted into Sichuan Normal University.

In 2003, Zhang took part in the "MTV-Samsung Anycall National Singing Competition" and won the second place.

2004–2006: Shang Teng Universal

In 2004, Zhang took part in the 1st season of My Show. After progressing through stages of strict selection, he won the annual championship in the finals, with the original song Love of the Plough composed with GOU Wei. Then he signed with Shang Teng Universal.

In 2005, Zhang released his debut album, The First Album. This album earned Zhang numerous newcomer awards such as the Global Chinese Music Chart Most Popular Male Newcomer award.

In 2006, after the release of his second album, Love Me Again, Zhang's music career was at stake due to changes at the top management of his record company.

2007–2015: EE-Media

In 2007, Zhang decided to take part in Hunan TV's show Super Boy and won the 4th place. Zhang, the third runner-up of the show, signed a deal with EE-Media and released an EP, The Most Beautiful Sun, in the same year, which marked a fresh restart of his career.

In May 2008, Zhang held his first concert in Beijing at Beijing Exhibition Center. In July, Zhang held his concert at Hangzhou Gymnasium. In October, he released the album, The Day After Tomorrow. With the album's positive performance on the music charts, he won his first "Most Popular Male Singer (Mainland)" award.

In 2009, for the album The Day After Tomorrow, Zhang gained 11 nominations in Beijing pop music ceremony and became the favorite figure. In November, Zhang released the album, Through Trilogy. On December 19, he held the theme concert of Through Trilogy at Beijing Workers' Gymnasium.

In April 2010, Zhang attended the Boao Forum for Asia as invited guest to perform two songs of Michael Jackson : Billie Jean and Beat it. In June, he sang the theme song for the film Triple Tap. In November, he released the 6th album, It's Love. In November, he held a theme concert as It's Love at Beijing Workers' Gymnasium. On November 28, he won the "Best Asian Artist" award in the Mnet Asian Music Awards. In December, he was invited as the only male singer from mainland China to the TVB Golden Melody Awards Ceremony in Hong Kong, and received an award for top ten golden songs of the year and Most Popular Male Singer (Mainland).

In 2011, Zhang released his next album, Stand Up. In December, he held the theme concert It's Love in his hometown Chengdu.

On March 1, 2012, as an invited guest, Zhang performed in a collaborative staging of the song My love at the concert of Westlife. He started his new touring concerts at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on 5 May and Shanghai Grand Stage on June 30 respectively. On September 29, he released an album called "One Chance" and then on 19 November he released a cover album called Love That We Once Encountered. Also, in this year, he set up his own studio: Zhang Jie Studio.

In February 2013, for the very first time, he was invited to perform the song Give Me Your Love with Yoga on CCTV Spring Festival Gala. In June, he went to Berklee College of Music for further studies in the summer. In September, he was invited to the China Tennis Open with famous tennis players Li Na and Novak Djokovic to promote public welfare work. In November, Zhang released his 10th album, Just Love, and held his 10th concert in Guangzhou.

In January 2014, Zhang joined Hunan Television's I Am a Singer Season 2. From September to December, Zhang held his first live tour, Fight Back For Love, which generated a positive response. In August, Zhang was invited to perform the theme song, Light the Future, in the Opening Ceremony of the Nanjing Youth Olympics 2014. In November, Zhang was presented with the International Artist Award at the 2014 American Music Awards, making him the first Chinese singer who has garnered this accolade. In this year, Zhang sang several songs for Chinese operas, and Heart Of Sword for opera Swords Of Legends was a hit.

In April 2015, he released his collection with Xiaomi. He also participated in various talent shows, including some adventure shows, music shows and reality shows. In May, Zhang ended his eight-year contract with EE-Media and made his own studio independent from EE-Media. Meanwhile, Zhang continued winning awards from several music shows this year. At the same time, he still sang for the opera The Lost Tomb and the film Monk Comes Down The Mountain directed by Kaige Chen.

2016–present: Planet Culture

On February 7, 2016, Zhang sang the song, Shining Era, in the CCTV Spring Festival Gala.On February 21, the Just For Star concert was held in United Artists Theater, Los Angeles. Zhang took charge of the concert and invited David Foster and violinist Lindsey Stirling to perform together. On April 26, Zhang set up his personal label, Planet Culture, and cooperated with Linfair Records. On July 16, Zhang began his first world tour at Beijing Worker's Stadium. On July 21, 2016, Zhang performed Star Trek Beyond's Chinese theme song Lost in the Stars, and attended the film's premiere at Embarcadero Marina Park South. Then, Zhang recorded the promotion song Give You My World for the film Allied in November. From July to December, Zhang's tour travelled to Beijing, Nanjing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Chengdu, Xi'an, Wuhan, Hefei, Dalian, and Kunming. With each city he visited, the concerts were sold out.

In February 2017, Zhang joined Hunan Television's Singer 2017, as the first previous season contestant to join the competition this season. In May and June, Zhang brought his world tour in the US, Canada, Malaysia and Australia. On May 7, Zhang held his concert in Dolby Theatre, which become the first mainland singer singing in the Dolby Theatre. On May 14, Zhang sang in the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, Vancouver. On May 21, Zhang came to David Geffen Hall, Lincoln Center.On June 10, Zhang performed in Kuala Lumpur and June 18 in Sydney.

In June, Zhang sang China's theme song, Torches,for The Last Knight.

In October, Zhang held his concerts in Milan and London.

Zhang is a tenor with a vocal range of around G2-C6. In recent years, after professional and systematic training, the bass has a deeper extension, and the treble skills are improved.

On August 6, 2008, Zhang was the 96th torchbearer at the Olympic torch relay in Chengdu.

On April 4, 2010, Zhang attended the Boao forum as an invited guest, performing two songs of Michael Jackson : Billie Jean and Beat it.

On January 19, 2011, Zhang was invited to the Chinese community conference in the Great Hall of the People.

On June 22, 2011, Zhang attended the “Asian Two-Hour Light Switches Off For Environmental protection” concert co-launched by China National Radio(CNR) and Tokyo Broadcasting System(TBS).

On July 17, 2011, Zhang performed a song, All Worth It at the Golden Mike Award held by China Radio and Television Association (CRTA).

On August 7, 2011, Zhang was the 70th torchbearer in the torch relay of the world university games in Shenzhen.

On June 30, 2012, Zhang performed the song, Beijing Zhu Fu Ni, the theme song of Beijing Cultural Week during the London Olympic Games.

On February 8, 2013, Zhang made his debut in the China Central Television (CCTV) Spring Festival Gala, and performed a song, Give Me Your Love, with Yoga Lin.

On February 24, Zhang performed a song, It’s Love in the CCTV Lantern Festival Gala for the first time.

On September 19, 2013, Zhang performed two song, respectively Here I Am and Watching The Moon Rise in the CCTV Mid-Autumn Festival Gala.

On September 27, 2013, Zhang was invited to the China Tennis Open with famous tennis players: Li Na and Novak Djokovic to promote public welfare work.

On August 16, 2014, Zhang was invited to perform the theme song, Light the Future, in the Opening Ceremony of the Nanjing Youth Olympics 2014, with other singers.

On February 7, 2016, Zhang performed Shining Era in the CCTV Spring Festival Gala.

On August 30, 2016, Zhang performed the song, Young Battlefield together with China women volleyball players at the party for the Olympic athletes.

On September 17, 2016, Zhang performed the well-known Against The War in the CCTV Mid-autumn Festival Gala

On December 15, 2016, Zhang performed Against The War in the Laurence Festival.

On January 1, 2017, Zhang performed the dragon as the ending of CCTV New Year's Party.

On January 27, The duet song, Fireworks sung by Chinese singer Mao Amin and Zhang received the peak of the viewership ratings of the CCTV Spring Festival Gala.

Philanthropy

In 2008, after Wenchuan earthquake, Zhang attended fund-raising galas many times to raise money. Meanwhile, he donated ¥200,000 to the disaster area.

On April 22, 2010, Zhang donated ¥100,000 to Yushu earthquake area by China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation (CFPA). On December 4, Zhang attended CFPA National public forum.

Music classroom

“张杰音乐梦想教室”是由张杰发起并单独出资200万元作为启动资金在中国人口福利基金会成立的“北斗星空爱心基金”旗下的项目,自2012年10月启动以来,至2016年10月陆续在全国各地设立二十九所“张杰音乐梦想教室”。

2015年1月26日,“张杰音乐梦想教室”公益项目在“2014环球风尚·年度盛典”上获“年度十大风尚榜样奖”[241-242] 。

Zhang was notable on his participation of Hunan Television's long-running singing reality competition I Am a Singer, notable on making it to the finals on both attempts.

I Am a Singer (season 2)

Zhang debuted on Week three as a substitute singer as a replacement of the first eliminated singer Gary Chaw. He made it to the finals, but did not finish in top two to qualify for the "Ultimate Winner Candidate" (the candidates were G.E.M. and Han Lei, with the latter winning the season).

Singer 2017

In February 2017, Zhang later returned again in the fifth season as the one of four returning singers to participate in the competition. He finished in eighth place after narrowly avoiding eliminations on six of 11 performances. Unlike his first season appearance, Zhang was not selected to participate in the Biennial Concert.

Personal life

On May 5, 2011, Zhang and Xie Na registered their marriage in Chengdu, China. On September 26, 2011, Zhang and his girlfriend Xie Na married at Shangri-La, China. On September 26, 2017, Zhang revealed on his weibo that his wife Xie Na is expecting a baby. On February 1, 2018, they welcomed twin daughters.[1]
