Jerome J. Randle (born May 21, 1987) is an American-Ukrainian professional basketball player under contract with the Sydney Kings of the National Basketball League (NBL), and also playing for Lokomotiv Kuban of the VTB United League. A graduate of the University of Cal-Berkeley in the Pac-10 Conference, Randle was a three-year starter for the Golden Bears, a two-time First Team All-Conference selection, and the Pac-10 Player of the Year in 2010. He was named to the Pac-12 Hall of Fame in January 2017.

Randle has played in France, Lithuania, Israel, Belgium, Ukraine and Turkey, and won the Lithuanian national league championship in 2016, earning Finals MVP in the process. He has a Ukrainian passport and played for his adopted country at EuroBasket 2015.

Randle began his NBL career in 2015 with the Adelaide 36ers, going on to earn All-NBL First Team honors in his first season. In his second season with Adelaide, he was named the NBL's Most Valuable Player after helping the 36ers win the minor premiership.

High school career

Randle attended Hales Franciscan High School in Chicago, Illinois. In 2005, he won a pair of championships after guiding his high school team to a 27–4 record and the Illinois state title and helping his Chicago Ferrari team to the 17-and-under AAU national crown,[1] earning tournament MVP honors[1] after scoring 44 points in one tournament game.[2] He averaged 12.3 points and 5.2 assists per game as a junior[3] before increasing those averages to 25 points, 1.5 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals as senior in earning state Class A Player of the Year honors from the Chicago Sun-Times.

After considering signing with Tulsa,[2] Randle committed to California in October 2005.[3]

College career

Randle was a three-year starter at Cal, earning first-team All-Pacific-10 Conference in both his junior and senior years. He was also named Pac-10 Player of the Year as a senior, and was named an AP honorable mention All-American. He finished his career at Cal as the school's all-time leading scorer with 1,835 career points. Randle also set school marks for three-pointers made with 252, and free throw accuracy at 88.1% for his career. In 2010, Randle led the program to its first conference title since 1960. Following his senior season, he was named a recipient of the Pacific-10 Tom Hansen Conference Medal,[4] and earned the Most Outstanding Player honor of the 2010 Reese's College All-Star Game.

Professional career

After going undrafted in the 2010 NBA draft, Randle joined the Orlando Magic for the Orlando Summer League[5] and the Washington Wizards for the Las Vegas Summer League.[6] On July 28, 2010, he signed with Aliağa Petkim of the Turkish Basketball Super League.[7] In January 2011, he left Aliağa and signed with Türk Telekom for the rest of the season.[8]

On August 16, 2011, Randle signed with Barak Netanya of the Israeli Basketball Premier League.[9] He appeared in seven games for the club before returning to the United States, where on December 14, he signed with the Dallas Mavericks for training camp.[10] However, he was later waived by the Mavericks on December 22 after appearing in two preseason games.[11] He also had a one-game stint with the Texas Legends, the Mavericks' D-League affiliate, on December 21. On December 30, he was acquired by the Maine Red Claws.[12] On February 2, 2012, he terminated his contract with the Red Claws in order to pursue opportunities overseas.[13] The next day, he signed with BC Azovmash of the Ukraine for the rest of the 2011–12 season.[14]

In July 2012, Randle joined the Memphis Grizzlies for the 2012 NBA Summer League where he averaged 7.5 points, 1.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists in four games. In September 2012, he signed with the Foshan Dralions of the Chinese Basketball Association.[15] However, he left the club before appearing in a game for them, and on December 30, he signed with Spirou Charleroi of the Belgian League.[16]

In July 2013, Randle joined the Los Angeles Clippers for the 2013 NBA Summer League where he averaged 7.6 points, 3.2 rebounds and 5.4 assists in five games. On October 22, 2013, he signed with Aliağa Petkim, returning to the club for a second stint.[17] In January 2014, he left Aliağa and signed with Trabzonspor for the rest of the season.[18] In August 2014, he re-signed with Trabzonspor.[19] On October 29, 2014, he parted ways with Trabzonspor.[20] On November 19, he signed with Eskişehir Basket for the rest of the season.[21]

In July 2015, Randle joined the Milwaukee Bucks for the 2015 NBA Summer League,[22] where he averaged 8.2 points, 1.2 rebounds and 3.6 assists in five games. On October 21, 2015, he signed with the Adelaide 36ers of the Australian National Basketball League for the rest of the 2015–16 season.[23] He made his debut for the 36ers the following day, scoring a game-high 24 points off the bench in an 88–79 win over the Cairns Taipans.[24] On November 7, he helped the 36ers claim the biggest comeback victory in the league's 40-minute game era, defeating the Sydney Kings 99–98. Randle scored 33 points, with 10 coming in the final term, including the match-winning free throws with 5.3 seconds left.[25] On January 20, 2016, he scored a league-high for 2015–16 with 41 points in a 96–89 win over the Sydney Kings.[26] On February 4, he was named NBL Player of the Month for January.[27] Randle appeared in 23 games for the 36ers in 2015–16, averaging a league-leading 23.0 points, 2.8 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game. However, he couldn't lead the 36ers to the playoffs, finishing the season in fifth place with a 14–14 win/loss record.[28] At the season's end, he was named the inaugural NBL Australia Post Fan's MVP,[29] and earned All-NBL First Team honors.[30]

On February 17, 2016, Randle signed with Žalgiris Kaunas of Lithuania for the rest of the 2015–16 LKL season.[31] He helped Žalgiris win the 2015–16 LKL championship with a Finals MVP performance.[32] In 21 games for the club, he averaged 11.6 points, 2.1 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game.

On March 2, 2016, Randle re-signed with the Adelaide 36ers for the 2016–17 NBL season.[33][34][35] In the 36ers' second game of the season on October 9, Randle scored a game-high 30 points in an 87–79 win over Melbourne United.[36] On October 16, he scored a season-high 34 points on 14-of-22 shooting in a 96–93 overtime win over the Brisbane Bullets.[37] He topped that mark on November 5 against the Perth Wildcats, scoring 40 points and adding nine assists in a 106–103 loss.[38] On December 10, he had a 37-point effort in a 102–92 win over the New Zealand Breakers.[39] He went on to lead the 36ers to the minor premiership with a 17–11 record. As a result of his great season, he was named the recipient of the NBL Most Valuable Player Award, becoming just the second 36ers player to be named MVP, joining Mark Davis who was honoured in 1987.[40] Randle was also named to his second consecutive All-NBL First Team[41] as well as winning the NBL Australia Post Fan's MVP for the second straight season.[42] Despite finishing first in the regular season, the 36ers were defeated in the semi-finals by the fourth-seeded Illawarra Hawks, losing the series 2–1. Randle appeared in all 31 games for the 36ers in 2016–17, averaging 21.3 points, 3.0 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 1.0 steals per game.

On March 1, 2017, Randle signed with French club Limoges CSP for the rest of the 2016–17 Pro A season.[43]

On September 15, 2017, Randle signed a reported lucrative two-year deal[44] with the newly-founded Bahcesehir of the Turkish Basketball First League.[45] He appeared in five games for Bahcesehir before parting ways with the club.

On November 9, 2017, Randle signed with the Sydney Kings for the rest of the 2017–18 NBL season.[46] He made his debut for the Kings seven days later, recording a game-high 28 points, nine rebounds and five assists in a 97–93 overtime loss to the Illawarra Hawks.[47] The Kings missed the finals in 2017–18 with an 11–17 record. Despite this, Randle became the first player to lead the NBL in both points (19.78)[48] and assists (5.26) per game since 1989, when Kings' coach Andrew Gaze accomplished this.[49]

On March 1, 2018, Randle signed with Rockets Gotha of the Basketball Bundesliga.[50][51]

On March 29, 2018, the Sydney Kings exercised the team option on Randle's contract for the 2018–19 season.[52]

National team career

In 2015, Randle replaced Pooh Jeter on the Ukrainian national basketball team after obtaining a Ukrainian passport.[53]

Personal life

Randle is married to wife Zhordan.[54] Randle's younger brother, Jamie Adams, is also a professional basketball player.[55]
