He played as a right-sided forward.[1] He represented the Scottish Junior international team.[2] Murray was born in Benwhat, Dalmellington, Ayrshire. He played for St Augustine's and for Benwhat Heatherbell before joining Ayr in 1897.[3] In March 1901 he moved to England and signed for the Football League champions Aston Villa; he played once in the 1900–01 season and once the following season before joining local rivals Small Heath in November 1901.[2] Murray scored in his only competitive outing for Small Heath, in a losing cause against Sunderland in the First Division,[4] and was described as "fairly fast, has capital command of the ball and can shoot excellently".[3] Nevertheless, he moved to Southern League club Watford in 1902, and later appeared for Kettering and Wellingborough, also in the Southern League.[5] He died in Glasgow in 1933 at the age of 53.[1][3] References1. ^1 {{Cite book|last=Joyce |first=Michael |title=Football League Players' Records 1888 to 1939 |publisher=SoccerData (Tony Brown) |location=Nottingham |year=2004 |page=193 |isbn=978-1-899468-67-6}} {{Use dmy dates|date=September 2010}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Murray, Jimmy}}{{Scotland-footy-forward-stub}}2. ^1 {{Cite web |url=http://www.astonvillaplayerdatabase.com/981.html |title=Murray, James Arthur |work=Aston Villa Player Database |publisher=Jörn Mårtensson |accessdate=18 August 2015}} 3. ^1 2 {{Cite book |last=Matthews |first=Tony |title=Birmingham City: A Complete Record |year=1995 |publisher=Breedon Books |location=Derby |pages=113–14 |isbn=978-1-85983-010-9}} 4. ^Matthews, p. 148. 5. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.watfordfcarchive.com/downloads/players/MergedplayersM.pdf |format=PDF |title=Former players: M |website=Watford Football Archive 1881–2015 |publisher=Trefor Jones |page=104 |accessdate=18 August 2015}} 13 : 1880 births|1933 deaths|Sportspeople from East Ayrshire|Scottish footballers|Association football forwards|Ayr F.C. players|Aston Villa F.C. players|Birmingham City F.C. players|Watford F.C. players|Kettering Town F.C. players|Wellingborough Town F.C. players|English Football League players|Southern Football League players |
