Born in Shepparton, Victoria, he attended the University of Melbourne before becoming a public servant with the Treasury Department in 1963.[1] He was Executive Secretary of the Australian Industry Development Corporation from 1973 to 1974. In 1975, he was elected to the House of Representatives as the Liberal member for Ballaarat. The name was changed to Ballarat in 1977. He held the seat until his defeat in 1980. In 1984, he was elected to the Senate.[2] Jim Short was appointed Assistant Treasurer in the First Howard Ministry in March 1996. On 14 October 1996 he resigned his portfolio after inadvertently misleading the Senate about a conflict of interest. He resigned from the Senate the following year to take up a $150,000-a-year (tax-free) position at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, where he remained until 2000. He served as Australian Special Envoy for Cyprus from 2000 to 2007.[3] References1. ^{{cite hansard|url=http://parlinfo.aph.gov.au/parlInfo/search/display/display.w3p;db=CHAMBER;id=chamber%2Fhansards%2F1996-10-29%2F0108;query=Id%3A%22chamber%2Fhansards%2F1996-10-29%2F0000%22 |speaker=Jim Short |position=Senator for Victoria |date=29 October 1996 |publisher=Australian Parliament House |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20150203215106/http://parlinfo.aph.gov.au/parlInfo/search/display/display.w3p%3Bdb%3DCHAMBER%3Bid%3Dchamber/hansards/1996-10-29/0108%3Bquery%3DId%3A%22chamber/hansards/1996-10-29/0000%22 |archivedate= 3 February 2015 |title=ADJOURNMENT: Condolences: Sir Roland Wilson |deadurl=yes |df= }} {{s-start}}{{s-par|au}}{{succession box | title=Member for Ballarat | before=Dudley Erwin| after=John Mildren| years=1975–1980}}{{s-end}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Short, Jim}}{{Australia-Liberal-politician-stub}}2. ^{{cite web|last=Carr |first=Adam |title=Australian Election Archive |work=Psephos, Adam Carr's Election Archive |url=http://psephos.adam-carr.net/countries/a/australia |year=2008 |accessdate=2008-06-08 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://www.webcitation.org/5QSilacl0?url=http://psephos.adam-carr.net/countries/a/australia |archivedate=20 July 2007 |df= }} 3. ^{{cite press release |author= |title=Appointment of UN Special Envoy for Cyprus & Appointment of Australian Special Representative for Cyprus |url=http://foreignminister.gov.au/releases/2008/fa-s109_08.html|location=Canberra |publisher=Australian Government |agency=Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade |date=13 July 2008 |access-date=18 August 2016}} 10 : Liberal Party of Australia members of the Parliament of Australia|Members of the Australian House of Representatives for Ballarat|Members of the Australian House of Representatives|Members of the Australian Senate for Victoria|Members of the Australian Senate|1936 births|Living people|Australian diplomats|Australian public servants|20th-century Australian politicians |
