}}John Anthony Pickett CBE DSc FRS[1] (born 21 April 1945) is a British chemist who is noted for his work on insect pheromones.[1]

Education

Pickett completed Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Chemistry[2] degrees at the University of Surrey and was a postdoctoral researcher in organic chemistry at UMIST.{{fact|date=August 2016}}

Career and research

He joined the Brewing Research Foundation.[3] In 1976, he moved to Rothamsted Experimental Station (now Rothamsted Research), studying ways to control insect pests by modifying behavioural activity.[4] He was appointed Head of the Insecticides and Fungicides Department (later the Biological Chemistry Department) in 1984, Director of the Centre for Sustainable Pest and Disease Management in 2007, Scientific Leader of Chemical Ecology in 2010 and in 2010 became the first Michael Elliott[5] Distinguished Research Fellow, in 2017 he took up a new role as Professor of Biological Chemistry at Cardiff University.

He delivered the Croonian Lecture in 2008 to the Royal Society on Plant and Animal Communication.[7]

Personal life

He married Ulla Birgitta Skålèn in 1970 and they have a son and a daughter.
