He played at representative level for England and Lancashire, and at club level for Wigan (Heritage № 622) (two spells),[4] St. Helens (Heritage № 868) and Widnes (Heritage №) as a {{rlp|pr}}, i.e. number 8 or 10, during the era of contested scrums.[2] BackgroundJohn Stephens was born in Widnes, Lancashire, his birth was registered in Prescot, Lancashire, England, he was a restaurateur in Liverpool, as of 2018 he lives in Newcastle upon Tyne with his partner Judith.
