Hardcastle was born at Clapham, London, the son of Alfred Hardcastle of Hatcham House, New Cross (then in Surrey) and the grandson of Joseph Hardcastle. He was educated at Mill Hill School and the Grammar School at Bury St Edmunds. He then studied at King's College, London and, after matriculating at Wadham College, Oxford, at Trinity College, Cambridge where he obtained a scholarship in 1836. He was also admitted at the Inner Temple on 2 December 1837 and called to the Bar on 11 June 1841.[5] He was a Cambridge Apostle. He was a Deputy Lieutenant for Surrey and a Justice of the Peace for Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk.[6] Hardcastle was elected at the 1847 general election as Member of Parliament (MP) for Colchester,[3] but was defeated in 1852.[7] At the 1857 general election he was elected for Bury St Edmunds,[4] and held the seat until his defeat at the 1874 general election.[7] He was re-elected at the 1880 general election, but when the borough's representation was reduced to one seat for the 1885 general election, he was defeated by the Conservative candidate, and did not stand again.[8] Hardcastle died at Woodlands, Beaminster, Dorset at the age of 83. Hardcastle married firstly Frances Lambirth, daughter of H. W. Lambirth of Writtle on 24 February 1840, and had issue. He married secondly Hon. Mary Scarlett Campbell, daughter of Lord Chancellor Campbell.[6] References1. ^11891 Census RG12/18 Folio 51, Page 43, Schedule 195: London - Kensington 54, Queens Gate Terrace (Names and Surname: Joseph A Hardcastle, Relation to Head of Family: Head, Condition of Marriage: M, Age last Birthday: 75, Profession or Occupation: Living on own means, Where Born: Clapham, Surrey 2. ^General Register Office index of deaths registered in July, August, September, 1899 - Name: Hardcastle, Joseph Alfred Age: 83 District: Beaminster Volume: 5A Page: 221. 3. ^1 {{cite web | url = http://www.leighrayment.com/commons/Ccommons5.htm | title = House of Commons constituencies beginning with C (part 5) | work = Leigh Rayment's House of Commons pages | accessdate=2009-04-02}} 4. ^1 {{cite web | url = http://www.leighrayment.com/commons/Bcommons6.htm | title = House of Commons constituencies beginning with S (part 6) | work = Leigh Rayment's House of Commons pages | accessdate=2009-04-02}} 5. ^{{acad|id=HRDL834JA|name=Hardcastle, Joseph Alfred}} 6. ^1 [https://archive.org/stream/debrettshouseo1881londuoft#page/104/mode/2up Debretts House of Commons and the Judicial Bench 1881] 7. ^1 {{cite book |last=Craig |first=F.
