Waku was elected Senator for the Benue North West constituency of Benue State, Nigeria at the start of the Nigerian Fourth Republic, running on the People's Democratic Party (PDP) platform. He took office on 29 May 1999.[1] After taking his seat in the Senate in June 1999 he was appointed to committees on Senate Services, Works & Housing, Health, Establishment, Water Resources (Chairman) and Privatization.[2] After leaving office, Waku became active in the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), a northern lobbying group. In a December 2003 interview he said that the Middle Belt Forum was deliberately excluding non-Christians from their organization, and explained that the ACF was formed to give a voice to northern minorities including those in the Middle Belt.[3] Speaking as Vice Chairman in June 2008, he accused Senate President David Mark of ethnic prejudice in opposing the appointment of Farida Waziri, a Tiv, as head of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.[4] References1. ^{{cite web |url=http://psephos.adam-carr.net/countries/n/nigeria/nigerialeg2.txt |title=FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA LEGISLATIVE ELECTION OF 20 FEBRUARY AND 7 MARCH 1999 |work=Psephos |accessdate=2010-06-24}} {{Nigerian Senators of the 4th National Assembly}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Waku, Joseph}}{{Nigeria-politician-stub}}2. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.nigeriacongress.org/assembly/committees1.htm |title=Congressional Committees |publisher=Nigeria Congress |accessdate=2010-06-24 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20091118151316/http://www.nigeriacongress.org/assembly/committees1.htm |archivedate=2009-11-18 |df= }} 3. ^{{cite web |url=http://news.biafranigeriaworld.com/archive/2003/dec/20/0020.html |date=December 20, 2003 |title=Middle Belt is part of Arewa –Senator Joseph Waku |work=Weekly Trust |author=Sani Babadoko |accessdate=2010-06-24}} 4. ^{{cite web |url=http://nm.onlinenigeria.com/templates/?a=12367 |title=Senate President, Waku exchange words over Waziri, EFCC chairmanship nominee |work=Online Nigeria Daily News |date=June 3, 2008 |author=GODWIN TSA |accessdate=2010-06-24}} 7 : Members of the Senate (Nigeria)|Living people|Benue State|People's Democratic Party members of the Senate (Nigeria)|20th-century Nigerian politicians|21st-century Nigerian politicians|Year of birth missing (living people) |
