She attended the Queen of the Rosary College, Onitsha and went on to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka where she earned a B.Sc. in Geography Education (1979), and then an LLB. Law (1985). After further legal training at the Nigeria Law School, Lagos she became a professional lawyer in 1987.[4] Early careerEmodi was an Education Officer with the Anambra State Schools Board (1983–1986), then Executive Secretary, Anambra State Development Authority (1994–1995). In 1995 she represented Nigeria at the Third African-American Summit in Senegal and at the World Women Conference in Beijing China. She was elected to the 1994/1995 Constitutional Conference. She was elected National Deputy Chairman (1994) and National Legal Adviser (1996) for the Congress for National Consensus (CNC) party during the administration of General Sani Abacha. In 1999 she was candidate for Anambra State governor on the All People's Party (APP) platform.[4] Senate careerEmodi won the People's Democratic Party (PDP) primaries for the 12 April 2003 election for the Anambra North Senatorial zone, and was declared the winner on 16 April 2003. A few days later, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) reversed this decision, and declared Emmanuel Anosike as the winner. INEC had earlier returned Anosike as the winner of Anambra East/West Constituency of the House of Representatives. After appeals, on 21 January 2004 the Election Petition Tribunal declared that Emodi had been duly elected, and after further appeals she took her seat in February 2005.[1] She was appointed Chairman of the Senate Committee on Education, and a member of committees on Senate Services, Communications, Federal Capital Territory, Housing, Privatization, Sports and Women Affairs & Youth Development.[5] After re-election in April 2007, Emodi was re-appointed the Chairman of Senate Committee on Education, and was appointed a member of the Committees on Solid Minerals, Establishment and Public Service, and Petroleum Resources (Down Stream Sector).[5] In a mid-term evaluation of Senators in May 2009, ThisDay Newspapers noted that she had sponsored the National Ethics Curriculum Administration (NIEPA), and sponsored and co-sponsored thirteen motions. She was chair of the Education committee.[6] Her second election was annulled and Igbeke declared the winner on 25 March 2010.[3] The Senate delayed, but was ordered to swear in Igbeke in May 2010.[7] Emodi ran for election in the April 2011 elections on the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) platform, winning 54,060 votes. She was defeated by John Okechukwu Emeka of the PDP, who won 60,788 votes.[8] References1. ^1 {{cite web |url=http://www.nigerianmuse.com/important_documents/?u=Anambra_tribunal_and_elections.htm |work=Guardian |date=February 21, 2005 |title=Court removes another Anambra senator, Anosike |author=Alifa Daniel and Lawrence Njoku |accessdate=2010-06-15}} {{Nigerian Senators of the 5th National Assembly}}{{Nigerian Senators of the 6th National Assembly}}{{Authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Emodi, Joy}}2. ^{{cite web |url = http://www.punchontheweb.com/Article2Print.aspx?theartic=Art200710132315828 |date = 2007-10-13 |title = INEC loses bid to defend senator’s victory |author = John Ameh |work = The Punch |accessdate = 2010-06-15 |deadurl = yes |archiveurl = https://archive.is/20111002095454/http://www.punchontheweb.com/Article2Print.aspx?theartic=Art200710132315828 |archivedate = 2011-10-02 |df = }} 3. ^1 {{cite web |url=http://www.businessdayonline.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=9584:appeal-court-removes-joy-emordi-confirms-anpp-candidate-winner-&catid=85:national&Itemid=340 |title=Appeal court removes Joy Emordi, confirms ANPP candidate winner |date=26 March 2010 |work=Business Day |accessdate=2010-06-15}} 4. ^1 {{cite web |url=http://www.senatorjoyemodi.info/profile.html |title=Biography |publisher=Joy Emodi |accessdate=2010-06-15}} 5. ^1 {{cite web |url=http://www.thenigerianvoice.com/nvnews/19728/1/senate-without-joy-emordi.html |title=SENATE WITHOUT JOY EMORDI |work=NBF News |date=18 Apr 2010 |accessdate=2010-06-15}} 6. ^{{cite web |url=http://allafrica.com/stories/200905250350.html?viewall=1 |title=An Improved Senate, But Some Uninspiring Senators... |work=ThisDay |date=24 May 2009 |accessdate=2010-06-15}} 7. ^{{cite web |url=http://allafrica.com/stories/201005130168.html |title=Joy Emordi Loses Again At Appeal Court |work=Daily Champion |author=Tony Ita Etim |date=13 May 2010 |accessdate=2010-06-15}} 8. ^{{cite web |url=http://www.inecnigeria.org/downloads/?did=114 |publisher=INEC |accessdate=2011-05-04 |title=Collated Senate results |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20110419203046/http://www.inecnigeria.org/downloads/?did=114 |archivedate=2011-04-19 |df= }} 14 : Members of the Senate (Nigeria)|Living people|1955 births|All People's Party (Nigeria) politicians|People's Democratic Party members of the Senate (Nigeria)|People from Anambra State|Nigerian women in politics|University of Nigeria, Nsukka alumni|Nigerian Law School alumni|Nigerian women lawyers|People from Onitsha|Igbo politicians|21st-century Nigerian politicians|21st-century women politicians |
