RAF Fairford is located near the village. The population was around 1,120 at the 2011 census.[1] HistoryThe Battle of Kempsford occurred on 16 January 800 AD when Æthelmund led a group of Hwiccians from Mercia in a raid against the Wiltsaetas people of Wessex. However Weoxtan led the Wiltsaetas against them, driving them back across the river. Both leaders were slain. There is a field on the banks of the Thames called Battlefield where spearheads were dug up in 1670, encouraging the view that this is where the battle took event took place.[2][3] At Kempsford Sir Thomas Thynne (died 1639) built a new country house, demolishing an important fortified house which in the Middle Ages had defended a crossing of the River Thames.[4] References1. ^1 {{cite web|url=https://neighbourhood.statistics.gov.uk/dissemination/LeadKeyFigures.do?a=7&b=11125101&c=GL7+4DZ&d=16&e=62&g=6481540&i=1001x1003x1032x1004&m=0&r=0&enc=1 |title=Parish population 2011 |publisher=Office for National Statistics |accessdate=24 March 2015 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20160304111426/https://neighbourhood.statistics.gov.uk/dissemination/LeadKeyFigures.do?a=7&b=11125101&c=GL7+4DZ&d=16&e=62&g=6481540&i=1001x1003x1032x1004&m=0&r=0&enc=1 |archivedate= 4 March 2016 |df= }} 2. ^{{cite web|title=Kempsford, Gloucestershire Heritage Guide|url=http://www.britainexpress.com/counties/glouces/az/Kempsford.htm|website=Britain Express|publisher=Britain Express|accessdate=6 November 2017}} 3. ^{{cite web|last1=Mynors|first1=A.
