KCUI (89.1 FM) was a radio station that served the Central College and Pella, Iowa communities. The station primarily broadcast a "block format," with student-DJs choosing their preferred genre. KCUI was licensed to Central University of Iowa, later renamed Central College.

The KCUI studios were located above the Mills Art Gallery in the IBS building for much of its life; toward the end, KCUI was housed in the then recently finished basement of the Maytag Student Center on Central College's campus.

The station's license was cancelled by the Federal Communications Commission on December 6, 2011. This followed a $7,000 fine from the FCC imposed in 2007 for late filing of the station's 2004 license renewal.[1]

Sunday programming on KCUI was, mostly to all, reserved for religious programming under a longstanding agreement with local churches. The scheduling and staffing for Sunday religious programming was managed by local Pella churches. Local churches helped start KCUI with Central College. The churches paid for much of the original audio equipment.

Todd M. Stein

PLEASE NOTE: I got a bit carried away listing many of my DJ career items. I will return to edit this list down. Thanks! --TMS

Summers 1986, 1987 & 1988: Stein was a summer DJ on KCUI through the UB/Upward Bound program. Circa 1986 Todd was a PT DJ & board-op on KBOE/KOSK. Todd also operated a DJ service with high school friends called "BTW LTD." (Born To Win) and they DJed junior high school dances.

1988-89: Todd officially joined the ranks of KCUI as a Student-DJ and News Reporter. Continued as a DJ, during breaks, on KBOE/KOSK.

1989-90: Again, Stein served as a Student-DJ & News Reporter. Continued as a DJ, during breaks, on KBOE/KOSK. Circa 1990, Todd joined the “KISS FM” staff as a PT DJ during the summer; KKSI’s studio was in the middle of the Penn Central Mall in Oskaloosa, at the time.

1990-91: In addition to being a Student-DJ & News Reporter, Stein was the station PD/Program Director. Stein hosted a radio program on KCUI called “Peace Scope ‘90” which was half CHUrban (Contemporary Hit Urban) music and half interviewing various Central/Pella area activist-type guests such as the Student President of “Students Concerned About the Environment” (SCATE) & within the show Todd featured his weekly "Central College Top 10 Rap & Dance Countdown." Todd was recognized as the "Best DJ of the Year" by his peers; he shared that honor with Preston A. Daniels II. As a member of the KCUI Management Team, Todd helped introduce & implement the station’s new tag-line of “The Des Moines Alternative” replacing the older “Hit Radio K-89 FM.” Stein moonlighted on the local commercial radio stations KNIA/KRLS as a Sports Reporter covering Men's Basketball & various other sports and as Color Commentator of Central College Football; and still as a DJ on nearby KBOE/KOSK during holiday breaks in Oskaloosa, IA.

Summer 1991: Todd kept the station on the air five days a week all summer long as a DJ, News Reporter, Trainer and General Manager. Stein personally trained the Upward Bound students that wanted experience as a radio DJ. With the exception of the approximate four weeks with UB-DJs, Todd ran the station solo as KCUI's GM & sole DJ. Todd also served as the official UB DJ for their twice weekly dances on campus for the full duration of UB, culminating in an end of summer trip & party which Todd DJed in Kansas City.

1991-92: Todd did a little of everything...DJ, News & Sports, CHUrban Music Director, General Manager. Todd hosted the weekly "Central College Top 10 Rap & Dance Countdown" first & second trimesters; third term Stein wrote/produced the show and had other DJs host the program; Todd was also the host DJ of the Friday Night Dance Party in "Grand Central Station" (currently known as "Fred's") inside the Maytag Student Center and was chosen to be the entertainment (DJ) at an NCAA Division III Women's Softball Tournament's Opening Picnic at Lake Red Rock (located between Pella & Knoxville). Stein led the way for KCUI to have a booth & broadcast KCUI at Pella's annual Tulip Time Festival. Stein helped lead KCUI to becoming a Reporting Station, reporting KCUI's weekly CHUrban Music Charts & Most Requested Tracks to CMJ/College Music Journal (what Stein called "the Billboard of college radio"). Becoming a reporting station also allowed KCUI, for the very first time, to begin receiving FREE promo music; prior to this, KCUI bought a few new albums every trimester with a budget less than $300/trimester. Todd M. Stein left KCUI shortly before graduating due to disagreements with the new station faculty adviser.

Post Graduation Notes:

1992-93: Co-Resident DJ/VJ ("Des Moines' Original Tag Team DJs") at "Flirts: A Dance Club" which was named #1 dance club in a Des Moines' newspaper's reader's poll. Co-owner of Party Attendants mobile DJ service.

1993-94: Resident DJ & Entertainment Director at Sneaker's. Stein was the only employee retained by three different ownership changes.

1994-98: Various Restaurant & Bar management; DJed weddings & events on the side.

1998-2000: Retail & sales management; DJed weddings & events on the side.

2001-2016: Owner/DJ/KJ/MC/VJ "Live Super DJ Service" & "Klassic Karaoke." This was a self-employed and full-time career for Todd. Todd is a former member in good standing of the American DJ Association (ADJA), National Association of Mobile Entertainers (NAME), Midwest Association of Professional DJs (MAPDJs), United States Online Karaoke Association (I think that was the name; it was a long time ago), and the co-founder of the Iowa Mobile DJ Network (IAMDJN). During this time, Stein held a number of DJ Residencies in Central Iowa nightclubs & bars while also serving the wedding industry with his DJ & MC skills. Stein was honored to be asked to assist running sound & video at a Mobile Beat Las Vegas Convention & Show circa 2011, where he also DJed (ran sound) for two sessions with Casper of "The Cha Cha Slide" fame. During Stein's lengthy entertainment career, Todd performed in eight states plus Vegas at thousands of events for thousands upon thousands of guests/partiers. Todd said his experiences at KCUI helped him start his successful & long term career as a DJ Entertainer.

2005-08: Owner/GM/Resident DJ/MC/VJ "STEIN'S sports. drink. entertainment." a high energy sports bar daily & high energy music video dance club Friday & Saturday nights.

2016-present: Stein shuddered his businesses, in the black (no debt), due to personal health issues and is currently a Stay At Home Dad hoping he can find his next "dream job" that'll work with his unpredictable Chronic Pain/Fibromyalgia/etc. (as of this post, August 2018). Todd founded & administers "Iowa Bar Bands" on Facebook; Todd said he founded the state wide group as "a small way of giving back" to live musicians after he "made a career of playing other people's music."
