The headwaters of the river rise near Tenterden. The river flows in a south-westerly direction, crosses the Muirs Highway east of Rocky Gully, flows through Mount Roe-Mount Lindesay National Park, crosses the South Coast Highway near Kenton, flows through the Owingup Nature Reserve swampland and finally discharges into the eastern side of Irwin Inlet. There are two tributaries to the Kent; Styx River and Nile Creek. The river was named in 1829 by Thomas Wilson who was the first European to explore the river. He named it after a member of his exploration party John Kent, of the 39th Regiment, Assistant Commissary General at the King George Sound garrison.[3] References1. ^{{LandInfo WA|r|K|7 September 2011}} {{coord|34|59|34|S|116|59|29|E|type:river_region:AU-WA|display=title}}{{Rivers of Western Australia}}{{WesternAustralia-river-stub}}2. ^{{cite web|url=http://maps.bonzle.com/c/a?a=p&cmd=sp&p=207954&st=&s=kent%20river|title= Bonzle Digital Atlas – Map of Kent River|year= 2009|accessdate= 12 July 2016}} 3. ^{{cite news | first = George | last = Sherriff | title = The History of Denmark - Its Exploration and Early Development | date = 26 January 1950 | url = http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article70515839 | work = Albany Advertiser | pages = 8 | accessdate = 4 Dec 2013}} 2 : Rivers of Western Australia|Great Southern (Western Australia) |
