They were founded by Colonel Benjamin Thompson, later Count Rumford, in 1781.[1] They were initially formed from the remnants of other British Loyalist units, including Black Loyalist soldiers. The King's American Dragoons primarily served on Long Island in 1782 and early 1783,[2] where they earned local notoriety for destroying a church and burial ground in order to erect Fort Golgotha in Huntington.[3] They were evacuated from New York and resettled in St. John, New Brunswick, in July 1783.[4] They were disbanded there in October.[5] References1. ^{{Cite book|url = https://books.google.com/books?id=iLkEAAAAYAAJ|title = Memoir of Sir Benjamin Thompson, count Rumford: with notices of his daughter|last = Ellis|first = George Edward|last2 = Sciences|first2 = American Academy of Arts and|date = 1871-01-01|publisher = Estes and Lauriat|language = en}} {{UK-mil-stub}}{{mil-hist-stub}}2. ^{{Cite book|url = https://books.google.com/books?id=K0JCAAAAIAAJ|title = The Loyalist Refugees of New Hampshire|last = Siebert|first = Wilbur Henry|date = 1916-01-01|publisher = Ohio State University|language = en}} 3. ^{{cite web |url=http://town.huntington.ny.us/permit_pics/215.pdf |title=Archived copy |accessdate=2010-12-16 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20110429024837/http://town.huntington.ny.us/permit_pics/215.pdf |archivedate=2011-04-29 |df= }} 4. ^{{Cite book|url = https://books.google.com/books?id=iLkEAAAAYAAJ|title = Memoir of Sir Benjamin Thompson, count Rumford: with notices of his daughter|last = Ellis|first = George Edward|last2 = Sciences|first2 = American Academy of Arts and|date = 1871-01-01|publisher = Estes and Lauriat|language = en}} 5. ^{{Cite book|url = https://books.google.com/books?id=iLkEAAAAYAAJ|title = Memoir of Sir Benjamin Thompson, count Rumford: with notices of his daughter|last = Ellis|first = George Edward|last2 = Sciences|first2 = American Academy of Arts and|date = 1871-01-01|publisher = Estes and Lauriat|language = en}} 1 : Loyalist military units in the American Revolution |
