The village is about 25 km from the district headquarters town of Nagapattinam. It is in the fertile river Cauvery Delta, known for its agrarian economy. The village made headlines in 1968 when 44 Dalits were burnt alive by local feudal non-Brahmin lords after being locked in a hut.[1] The incident is known as the Kilvenmani massacre. Every year the massacre is commemorated by left wing and Dalit groups as "Venmani Martyrs Day". A large memorial was erected by the Communist Party of India (Marxist).[2] References1. ^{{cite news | url=http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-tamilnadu/anniversary-of-keezhvenmani-carnage-observed/article126200.ece | title=Anniversary of Keezhvenmani carnage observed | newspaper=The Hindu | date=26 December 2009 | first=P.V. | last=Srividya | accessdate=7 August 2018 }} 2. ^{{cite news | url=https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/tamil-nadu/New-memorial-to-commemorate-Keezhvenmani-massacre/article11405049.ece | title=New memorial to commemorate Keezhvenmani massacre | newspaper=The Hindu | date=10 March 2014 | accessdate=7 August 2018 }} External links{{commons category|Kizhavenmani}}
