The feature lies {{Convert|1.5|nmi|km|0}} west of Castle Rock. The name was adopted by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names on the recommendation of Gerald L. Kooyman, a United States Antarctic Research Program biologist who studied physiological characteristics related to diving in the Weddell seal in this vicinity, 1963–64 and 1964–65. Kooyman reported that this descriptive name was already in use by other field workers in the area.References
