It is one of a series of terminal lakes on the Wimmera River, which form the largest land-locked drainage system in Victoria. Lake Albacutya is designated as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.[3] Location and featuresOn the occasions that there is an overflow from Lake Hindmarsh to the south, water enters Outlet Creek which then feeds Lake Albacutya. When full, Lake Albacutya covers {{Convert|5500|ha|acre|abbr=on}}, is {{Convert|8|m|ft|abbr=on}} deep, and holds around {{convert|230|GL|cuft|abbr=off}} of water. The lake generally fills and empties on a 20-year cycle, the longest dry period on record being 27 years.[4] In 2011 it was reported that the lake had not received any inflow for some years and remained dry throughout the wetter years of 2011-2012.[5] Being less saline than Lake Hindmarsh, Lake Albacutya supports a denser cover of vegetation during its dry phase.[6] References1. ^{{cite web|url=https://services.land.vic.gov.au/vicnames/place.html?method=edit&id=44|title=Lake Albacutya|work=Vicnames|publisher=Victorian Government|date=2 May 1966|accessdate=4 June 2014}} {{Lakes of Victoria}}{{Ramsar sites in Australia}}{{VictoriaAU-geo-stub}}2. ^{{Cite web|title=Lake Albacutya|website=Ramsar Sites Information Service|url=https://rsis.ramsar.org/ris/270|accessdate=25 April 2018}} 3. ^{{cite web|title=Lake Albacutya|url=http://www.depi.vic.gov.au/water/rivers-estuaries-and-wetlands/wetlands/significant-wetlands/lake-albacutya|website=Department of Environment and Primary Industries|publisher=Victorian Government|accessdate=2015-10-31}} 4. ^{{cite web|title=Lake Albacutya Park|url=http://parkweb.vic.gov.au/explore/parks/lake-albacutya-park|publisher=Parks Victoria|accessdate=2015-10-31}} 5. ^{{cite news|url=http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/parched-lake-may-end-15year-dry-20110124-1a2vu.html|work=The Age|author=Ker, Peter|title=Parched lake may end 15-year dry|date=25 January 2011|accessdate=28 October 2014}} 6. ^{{cite web|url=http://www.mdba.gov.au/files/basinplan/2010-HIS-report-18-wimmera.pdf |accessdate=January 21, 2011 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl=https://www.webcitation.org/65ognNOYT?url=http://www.mdba.gov.au/files/basinplan/2010-HIS-report-18-wimmera.pdf |archivedate=February 29, 2012 |df= |title=Chapter 18 – Wimmera River Terminal Wetlands, Assessing environmental water requirements, July 2010 Prepared by the Murray–Darling Basin Authority.}} 3 : Lakes of Victoria (Australia)|Ramsar sites in Australia|Wimmera |
