The lake is located in the {{convert|7809|acre|km2|0|sing=on}} Fleming Park, which is managed by Jackson County Parks and Recreation Ascociation. The idea for the lake began in 1932. The Presiding Judge of Jackson County, Harry S. Truman, requested that a study be done for a potential park. However, nothing was done at that time. It was 20 years later that local voters approved a bond issue to create and develop the lake. Lake Jacomo officially opened May 30, 1959. Origin of nameThe lake’s name is an acronym, from Jackson County, MO (Missouri), the county that it is located in. Recreational activitiesActivities at the lake including sailing, tubing, pontoon boats, fishing, and hiking. Common fish include crappie, bluegill, largemouth bass, carp, catfish, hybrid striped bass, green sunfish, and walleye. MarinaLake Jacomo boasts a "state of the art" marina open to the public year around. This marina is the largest boat rental marina in the Kansas City metropolitan area with more than 80 rentals available. Services provided include:
Other featuresDocks: There are a few points on the lake besides the marina where a boat can dock. These areas usually contain restrooms, small areas to park, and trails or roads back out to a main road. Sailboat Cove: Sailboat Cove is a storage area in the lake for private sailboats. Sailboats are floating in the water, attached to buoys. Fishing is permitted, but it is a no wake zone. Trails: There are trails that span near the perimeter of the lake. Shelters: There are several shelters near the lake edge. Swimming Areas: though there are no official beaches, there are places at the lake’s edge where one can safely get into the water that are accessible by roads and trails.
