McCook, a physician and eldest son of Daniel and Martha (Latimer) McCook, was born at Canonsburg, Pa., Apr. 26, 1820. After graduation from Jefferson College, he studied medicine with his uncle, Dr. George McCook, and received his degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia.[1] He entered the army in 1861 as assistant surgeon, and was promoted to surgeon, with the rank of major, of the 31st Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment, known as John Logan's regiment through most of the civil war. He died Aug. 23, 1869, from the result of injuries received during Grant's Vicksburg campaign, and exposure incident to Sherman's march to the sea, and injury at Pocotaligo bridge.[1] He was buried at Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio.[1] He was a member of the Fighting McCooks family of soldiers.
