There have been 14 recognised incarnations of the Dalai Lama. In addition, there was one unofficial Dalai Lama named Yeshe Gyatso (declared in 1707) as a pretender for the position of the 6th Dalai Lama, but was never accepted as the true Dalai Lama by a majority of the population.
