Lamar or Lamarr is a word with multiple origins. It is in use as a feminine Arabic name meaning "liquid gold".[1] Its English use is primarily masculine and derives from an English and ultimately French surname that originated from a place name in Normandy meaning "the sea" (la mer).{{Citation needed|reason=Reliable source needed for the whole sentence (I read that Lamar has Spanish origins) |date=April 2016}} (note: "Lamarre" is a frequent surname in French, especially in Quebec. Apart from resembling "l'amarre" (anchor) it may refer to "la mare" (pond) ; or to "la mer" (sea) as in the other French surname "Lamer".)
