Long Island Occupational and Environmental Health Center (LIOEHC), is one of the NYS Department of Health (DOH) Occupational Health Clinics (OHC).

The NYS Occupational Health Clinic Network (NYSOCN) includes seven regionally based clinics along with an agricultural medicine clinic. The clinics are mandated to:

  • Perform OSHA and EPA mandated examinations for asbestos, chromium, noise exposure and hazardous waste
  • Diagnose and treat occupational and environmental disease related to or caused by hazardous exposures (e.g. asbestos, chromium, lead, mold, hazardous waste), infectious disease (e.g. Lyme, TB), noise exposure, repetitive back or strain injuries and airborne contaminants
  • Design and conduct surveillance programs for hazardous substances chromium, asbestos, noise and lead exposure
  • Conduct medical screenings for workers at increased risk of occupational illness
  • Perform industrial hygiene evaluation of workplaces of concern, Department of Transportation examinations, and medical and industrial hygiene testimony at workers' compensation hearings

In addition, LIOEHC reviews existing occupational health programs, and assists with design, implementation and evaluation of OSHA, EPA, PESH and state-mandated medical monitoring programs.

The LIOEHC was a NIOSH selected site for evaluation of World Trade Center related health problems and was established through a New York Department of Health grant awarded to SUNY Stony Brook Research Foundation on behalf of Stony Brook University Medical Center (SBUMC) faculty, through the Department of Preventive Medicine. LIOEHC is affiliated with Stony Brook Medical Center and publicly funded.

LIOEHC collaborates with other groups to conduct studies on the relationship between the workplace, the environment and health problems and, as of August 2010, projects with NYCOSH focus on indoor air quality and safe patient handling.
