The city has a population of almost 150,000 according to the {{census-ar|2001}}. La Rioja is located on the foot of the Velasco Sierras, {{convert|1167|km|mi|0|abbr=on}} from Buenos Aires, and {{convert|430|km|mi|0|abbr=on}} from Córdoba.
