She was the first person in the 20th century to be allowed to term her school a hālau, and in 1952 opened Hālau Hula O Maiki. She brought several innovations to her teaching, accepting interested students regardless of background and emphasizing related traditional arts in addition to hula. In 1972, she was the first to publicly advertise a class for kumu hula.[2] Many of her pupils became teachers themselves, and she has been called the "most important hula teacher of the 20th century".[3] Her students included Leina'ala Kalama Heine and Robert Cazimero of The Brothers Cazimero.[4] References1. ^{{Cite book|editor-last=Carnes|editor-first=Mark C.|title=American National Biography: Supplement 2|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=wZczV8ZxgL4C&pg=PA330|date=12 May 2005|publisher=Oxford University Press, USA|isbn=978-0-19-522202-9|pages=330–331}} {{Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame}}{{Authority control}}{{DEFAULTSORT:Lake, Margaret Maiki Souza Aiu}}{{dance-bio-stub}}2. ^1 {{Cite web |title=Maiki Aiu Lake: Kumu Hula and Preserver of Hawaiian Culture |series=Biography Hawaiʻi: Five Lives: A Series of Public Remembrances |url=http://www.hawaii.edu/biograph/pdf/maikiguide.pdf |author=Puakea Nogelmeier |publisher=Center for Biographical Research of the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa |access-date=31 March 2015}} 3. ^{{Cite magazine |date=1 November 2005 |title=The Honolulu 100 - Maiki Aiu Lake to Kimo McVay |url=http://www.honolulumagazine.com/Honolulu-Magazine/November-2005/The-HONOLULU-100-7/ |journal=Honolulu |access-date=31 March 2015}} 4. ^{{cite news|first=Nina|last=Wu |title=Kumu hula Leina‘ala Kalama Heine dies |url=http://www.staradvertiser.com/news/breaking/20150909_Kumu_hula_Leinaala_Kalama_Heine_dies.html?id=326156731 |work=Honolulu Star-Advertiser |date=2015-09-22 |accessdate=2015-09-29|archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20150926141101/http://www.staradvertiser.com/news/breaking/20150909_Kumu_hula_Leinaala_Kalama_Heine_dies.html?id=326156731 |archivedate=2015-09-26|deadurl=no}} 3 : 1925 births|1984 deaths|Hula dancers |
