Malangwa (Nepali: मलंगवा) is a town and municipality and the headquarter of Sarlahi District in the Janakpur Zone of Province No. 2 of Nepal. It is located at 26°52'0N 85°34'0E with an altitude of 79 metres (262 feet) near the border with India at Sonbarsa.[3] There is a customs checkpoint at the border crossing.

Etymology

The name Malangwa is derived from Malang baba, an Islamic Saint. In the name of him, fair is organised in the town, every year near to the border. The people celebrate the occasion in the month of Chaitra. They offer chadar and pray for their well-being.

Demographics

At the time of the 2018/8/24 it had a population of 46,516 [according to Malangwa municipality] people residing in about 7,500 individual households.[4] People mostly belong to Madhesi (Hindus, Muslims, Janjatis) Newari & Marwadi backgrounds.

The Malangwa has a humid, tropical climate. The mean annual rainfall at the Malangwa was {{convert|2214|mm|in|abbr=on}} between 1995 and 2006. More than 80% of the total annual rainfall occurs during the monsoon season from June to September. Average temperatures ranged from {{convert|8.08|C|F|abbr=on}} in January to {{convert|34|C|F|abbr=on}} in June.[6]

In the past, the inner and outer Terai were a formidable barrier between Nepal and potential invaders from India because marshes and forests were infested by anopheline mosquitos that transmitted virulent strains of malaria, especially during the hot spring and rainy summer monsoon.

There are several differences between the climate on the eastern edge of the Terai at Biratnagar in Nepal and on the western edge of the Terai at Nepaljung in Nepal to that of Malangwa in Nepal although they lies in same plain of Terai.

  • Moving inland and away from monsoon sources in the Bay of Bengal, the climate becomes more continental with a greater difference between summer and winter.
  • In the far western Terai, which is five degrees latitude further north, the coldest months' average is {{convert|4|C}} cooler.
  • Total rainfall markedly diminishes from east to west. The monsoon arrives later, is much less intense and ends sooner. However, winters are wetter in the west.au in Nepal near the central edge although both lies in Terai.

Geography

It is situated in the Terai Region of Sarlahi district and Province_No._2 of Nepal. It is the Headquarter of Sarlahi district. It is the oldest municipality in Sarlahi district established in 2044 B.S. It is situated 25 km south from Nawalpur on the Mahendra Highway.

There are 4 parliamentary constituencies in Sarlahi. Malangwa is in parliamentary constituency no. 2.

Malangwa has its importance because of its border sharing with Sonbarsa, India also. No documents are required to cross the border. Certain restrictions are enforced on many edible and electronics products and they are properly checked before allowing a transit.[8]

There is a custom office which keeps a check on the vehicles entering Malangwa having Indian vehicle registration number. Certain taxes are imposed by the office on heavy products/items entering Nepal.

Media

To Promote local culture Malangwa has four FM radio stations Radio Madhesh - 89.3 MHz, Radio Malangwa 93.6 MHZ, Swarnim FM -96.3 MHZ and My FM - 107.4 MHz Which are a Community radio Station .

Cinema and Theatre

There are two movie theatres in Malangwa named Pushp takij Ac cinema and Rajshree Cinema Hall. People flock down from adjacent villages to watch movies in Malangwa. Even people across the border show up in large numbers to watch their favorite movie stars. The theatres show Nepali, Bollywood as well as Bhojpuri films throughout the year.

Maoist Attack and Bombings

Malangwa, being the headquarter of Sarlahi district has been subjected to several attacks and bombings. However cooperation between Police, Army and Armed Police Force have yielded positive effect resulting no sort of attacks in recent years.

  • April 5, 2006

The town was attacked by Maoists on April 6 at 8:00 pm. They fired at soldiers guarding government offices and security posts and attacked a jail, freeing more than 100 inmates — among them some of their comrades — before fleeing. The night-vision equipped helicopter MI-17 ( Russian-built ) with call sign RAN-37 took off from Kathmandu at 10 pm to foil the Maoist attack. Eyewitnesses said the helicopter hovered for an hour, then returned after refuelling in Simra but exploded in mid-air at about 1:30 am killing eight of the 10 soldiers on board.[9][10][11][12][13] Five police personnel, four Maoist and two civilians were killed during clashes. The figures however vary. Many security persons were even abducted including Chief District Officer (CDO) Bhojraj Adhikari.[14] however they were released later. A high alert was sounded just after the incident along the 800 km of Indo-Nepal border. Across the border( India) a joint team of SSB and CRPF were constituted to keep surveillance on border to thwart any further endeavours.[15]

  • September 13, 2013

At least 10 people including a section officer got injured when a bomb went off in District Survey Office at around 11:45 am. Among the injured, three were said to be in critical condition. The injured victims underwent treatment at the District Hospital, Malangwa. The bomb exploded at the counter of the office, near the main gate. The papers of the survey office burnt because of the blast.

Natural Calamities

The town experienced severe tremors from the earthquake on 25 April 2015. However, the town did not suffer any significant damage.

Malangwa had been destroyed during the great earthquake of 1934.

Communication

Nepal Telecom and Ncell have network coverage. Ncell has a 3G network for a long time there but now Nepal Telecom also has a 3G network. Other cellular network available are UTL Nepal, Smart Cell. Indian network providers such as Airtel, Telenor, BSNL and MTS's network is available too. ISPs like Worldlink, UTL Nepal and Nepal Telecom is available.It has two biggest Nepal Telecom towers. It has also Ncell tower near Shiv Sagar chowk.

Sports

The most popular sports in Malangwa is Cricket and Football.The youths are mainly playing this game for

years.Many players from this place has been participating in different formats of cricket.

Play Grounds

There are many play grounds in city but mainly two of them are popular and most suitable grounds for the playing purpose.

1. COVER HALL Cricket Ground

It is the biggest ground in the city and famous for cricket game.It has boundary of about 60–65 meters long.It hosts many tournaments from school level to district level.It is situated near New bus station located in southern part of Malangwa at ward no. 2.It organizes Jaycess cricket district cup every year.It also organize Mayor football women cup every year.

===2.Malangwa tin(3) bighe ground

It is small in size compare to COVER HALL Cricket Ground.It is mainly famous for football and cricket.It is situated next to C.D.O. office Malangwa 10.It has also organized night cricket cup.

Malangwa premier league (MPL) 2075

This is first Edition of Malangwa premier league schedule to take place in 2075.All the matches take place in COVER HALL Cricket Ground.In which, all team can purchase player from the country inside or outside like AUCTION POOL.It is famous cricket league in the district. The players are purchased by ward mayor by providing money to them. Several players of our country has taken part in it . Mahboob alam was the highest run getter of season 1.He has also make a century in this tournament.Radio madhesh was official broadcasters of live matches.It was sponsered by Malangwa Municipality and was supported by District Sports Office.

SAHID Park

It is undergoing on construction park in Malangwa.It is situated just next to the C.D.O. Office near Malangwa Tin(3) Ground.

Transport

  • Road: Malangwa is roughly 204.1 km by road from Kathmandu. It is also well connected to other parts of the country by Bus Services.

Malangwa-Nawalpur Highway, MG Highway starts there and joins to East-West Highway in Lalbandi which connects Malangwa to all major cities of Nepal.

The transport facility is reliable. There are more than 15 buses directly for capital of Nepal, Kathmandu, including 5 Volvo. One can also get direct bus for other major cities like Birgunj, Janakpurdham, Pokhara, Biratnagar, Dharan, Gaur, Bharatpur, etc.

The nearest domestic airport, Janakpur Airport, is in Dhanusha while nearest International airport, Nijgadh International Airport is under construction in Nijgadh.[17] Currently passengers use Tribhuvan International Airport located in capital of Nepal, Kathmandu, for International flight.

As it is a border of Nepal that links India via Sonbarsha, one can reach to all major cities of India using Indian Railways an the government of India has made direct Straight highway from Sonbarsha to Patna by four lines highway available at Sonbarsha. Sitamarhi railway station is about 15 km from Malangwa and several local transport like Tanga, Rickshaw, etc. are available from here.*Intracity: Cycle, rickshaws and taxis serve the city center. Auto rickshaws (Tempos) are available for longer distances outside the center. City Safari Or Electric rickshaws are most used transportation here, which connects all part of Malangwa and is very cheap and suitable.It has one of the biggest bus station in Nepal.

Tourism

About 500 tourists come here every year to watch the direct border connection with India. People also come here to enjoy picnic every year. Many people also come here to watch the famous Sonbarsha-Sitamarhi four(4) lines highway. People also come here to visit temples in the city.

# Jhim Pool

This a concrete bridge over a canal now. Jhim River used to flow at this place. Chhath puja of this place is very famous.

# Durga Bhagwati Mandir and RajDevi Mandir

This is a temple of goddess Durga made in Nagarpalika chowk. Next to the temple is Balmandir ground.

Another temple is Rajdevi Temple which is located three km distance in east from the city.It is one of the ancient temples of the Sarlahi district. It Was Built During ancient time and it is about 150 years old.
