MasterChef India is an Indian competitive cooking show based on the original British MasterChef. It was broadcast on Star Plus from 2010 to 2016.

Format

MasterChef India initial rounds consist of a large number of contestants from across India individually auditioning by presenting a dish before the three judges to gain one of 50 semi-final places.

The semi-finalists then compete in several challenges which test their food knowledge and preparation skills. In Season 1 and 2, the top 50 competed until 12 were left, with the final 12 progressing to the main stage of the show. The winner competes for a prize that includes their own cookery show, the chance to have their own cookbook published, and {{INR}} 10,000,000 in cash.

Broadcasting

Season 1 (2010)

Season 1 of the show started airing on STAR Plus Saturday and Sunday evenings.[1] The first episode aired on 16 October 2010, and the season one finale was broadcast on 25 December 2010. The first winner of MasterChef India was Pankaj Bhadouria, a 39-year-old teacher from Lucknow. Season 1 was chief guest by actor Akshay Kumar who worked as a chef in Bangkok before his acting career, along with chef Ajay Chopra who is working as an executive chef at Goa Marriott Resort, and chef Kunal Kapur an executive chef at Leela Kempinski, Gurgaon.

Season 2 (2011–12)

Season 2 of MasterChef India premiered on 22 October 2011. The second season aired on every Saturday and Sunday evenings and was hosted by chef Vikas Khanna with Ajay Chopra and Kunal Kapur as judges. On 1 January 2012 Tanuj Jaggi from Shimla,[2] Nita Mehta also participated in the program.[3] Chef Kunal Kapur was invited to MasterChef USA Season 2 as a guest judge in the semifinal.

Shipra Khanna was the winner in the second season of MasterChef India.[4]

Season 3 (2013)

The third season premiered on 11 March 2013 on Star Plus. It was special because it was the first time in the history of MasterChef that a pure vegetarian format was created and thus applauded by the vegetarian audience of India and also appreciated worldwide.[5] Chef Vikas Khanna and Kunal Kapur served as host and judges, along with Chef Sanjeev Kapoor , who replaced Chef Ajay Chopra.[5] Ripu Daman Handa was declared the winner of this season.[6]

Season 4 (2015)

The fourth season premiered on Star Plus on 26 January 2015. Chefs Sanjeev Kapoor, and Vikas Khanna remained judges from the previous Season, while Ranveer Brar replaced Kunal Kapur.[7]

Finalists Nikita Gandhi, the contestant from Abu Dhabi became the winner after a tough competition from the other two finalists while the first runner-up being Neha Deepak shah and Bhakti Arora from Hyderabad being the second runner up.[8]

Season 5 (2016)

The auditions for the fifth season of MasterChef India began from 5 June 2016, with the first auditions took place on 5 June. The auditions in New Delhi placed on 18 & 19 June and in Mumbai on 25 & 26 June 2016 respectively. Auditions of this season took place outside of India as well.

MasterChef India 2016 was premiered on 1 October 2016. In the 5th season judges were Vikas Khanna, Kunal Kapur, and Zorawar Kalra.

Kirti Bhoutika was first finalist of MasterChef India. Dinesh Patel and Mirvaan Vinayak were second and third finalist of MasterChef India 5 respectively. After serving Dish for Matthew Hayden at Sydney Cricket Ground in Australia Ashima Arora became fourth finalist of MasterChef India season 5.

Kirti and Aashima became the Top 2 finalist of the season 5. Kirti Bhoutika, the Dessert Queen was the winner of MasterChef India 5.

Junior MasterChef India

India's own Junior MasterChef started on 17 August 2013 and aired on Saturdays and Sundays at 9:00 pm IST. It was titled Junior Masterchef Swaad Ke Ustaad. The winner of the show was Sarthak Bhardwaj with Sakshi Triphathi as the 1st runner up and Emmanuel Chauhan as 2nd runner up.
