It is the seat of the gmina (administrative district) called Gmina Małdyty.[1] It lies approximately {{convert|29|km|mi|0}} north-west of Ostróda and {{convert|52|km|mi|0|abbr=on}} west of the regional capital Olsztyn. Before 1945 the area was part of Germany (East Prussia). Following World War II the native German populace was expelled and replaced by Poles. The village has a population of 1,410.
