It was formerly included in Melaleuca uncinata and is similar to that species with its cylinder-shaped leaves and small heads of yellow flowers, but with smaller, less compressed fruiting capsules. DescriptionMelaleuca interioris is a shrub growing to {{convert|3|m|ft|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} tall with papery bark. Its leaves are spreading or erect and are {{convert|6-56|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long, {{convert|06-1.2|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide, linear in shape, roughly circular to oblong in cross-section and end in a sharp point.[1]The flowers are yellow and are arranged in heads which are composed of 4 to 9 groups of flowers in threes. The petals are {{convert|1.1-1.3|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long, circular to egg-shaped and fall off as the flower opens. There are five bundles of stamens around the flower, each with 4 to 9 stamens. Flowering occurs between August and November and is followed by fruit which are woody capsules, {{convert|3.8-8|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide, about the same length as width. The capsules remain separate from each other (whereas in Melaleuca uncinata they tend to become compressed together so that they look like a single fruit).[1] Taxonomy and namingMelaleuca interioris was first formally described in 2004 by Lyndley Craven and Brendan Lepschi in Australian Systematic Botany[2] from a specimen collected {{convert|134|km|mi|sigfig=1}} north of Leinster in Western Australia.[3] The specific epithet (interioris) refers to the interior of Australia, where this species is found.[1]Distribution and habitatThis melaleuca occurs in the central parts of Western Australia,[4] the central parts of South Australia, the southern half of the Northern Territory, far west of New South Wales[5] and the far south-west corner of Queensland.[1] It grows in shrubland in red sand on the edges of salt lakes, and near ephemeral creeks, claypans and floodplains.[1][4] ConservationMelaleuca interioris is listed as "not threatened" by the Government of Western Australia Department of Parks and Wildlife.[4]Uses in agricultureMelaleuca interioris and related species of melaleucas such as M. uncinata and M. atroviridis can be used to protect property from wind and water erosion, reduce salinity and waterlogging, provide wildlife habitat and provide income by harvesting for brushwood fencing.[6]References1. ^1 2 3 4 {{cite book|last1=Brophy|first1=Joseph J.|last2=Craven|first2=Lyndley A.|last3=Doran|first3=John C.|title=Melaleucas : their botany, essential oils and uses|date=2013|publisher=Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research|location=Canberra|isbn=9781922137517|page=205}} {{Taxonbar|from=Q6811045}}2. ^{{cite journal|last1=Craven|first1=Lyn A.|last2=Lepschi|first2=Brendan J.|last3=Broadhurst|first3=Linda|last4=Byrne|first4=Margaret|title=Taxonomic revision of the broombush complex in Western Australia (Myrtaceae, Melaleuca uncinata s.l.)|journal=Australian Systematic Botany|date=2004|volume=17|issue=3|page=263|doi=10.1071/SB04001}} 3. ^{{cite web|title=Melaleuca interioris|url= https://biodiversity.org.au/boa/instance/apni/589519|publisher=APNI|accessdate=12 May 2015}} 4. ^1 2 {{FloraBase|name=Melaleuca interioris|id = 20288}} 5. ^{{cite web|title=Melaleuca interioris|url=http://plantnet.rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/NSWfl.pl?page=nswfl&lvl=sp&name=Melaleuca~interioris|publisher=Royal Botanic Garden Sydney:PlantNet|accessdate=12 May 2015}} 6. ^{{cite web|title=Integrated brushwood plantings for natural resource management benefits to farming systems|url=http://www.avongro.com.au/Webpages/documents/BrushwoodandNRMfinal.pdf|publisher=Avongrow Wheatbelt Tree Croppping|accessdate=12 May 2015}} 4 : Melaleuca|Flora of Western Australia|Plants described in 2004|Taxa named by Lyndley Craven |
