}} Melaleuca orophila, commonly known as needle bottlebrush or Flinders Ranges bottlebrush, is a plant in the myrtle family, Myrtaceae and is endemic to the eastern part of South Australia. (Some Australian state herbaria continue to use the name Callistemon teretifolius).[1] It is a medium-sized shrub with sharp-pointed, needle-like leaves and bright red bottlebrush flower spikes. DescriptionMelaleuca orophila is a shrub growing to {{convert|2|m|ft|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} tall with hard, fissured bark and rigid branches. Its leaves are arranged alternately and are {{convert|44-143|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long, {{convert|0.8-1.7|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} wide, linear in shape and circular or almost so in cross section.[2][3]The flowers are bright red or orange-green and arranged in spikes on the ends of branches which continue to grow after flowering and also on the sides of the branches. The spikes are {{convert|40-55|mm|in|sigfig=2|abbr=on}} in diameter with 12 to 55 individual flowers. The petals are {{convert|3.5-7.4|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long and fall off as the flower ages and there are 25-42 stamens in each flower. Flowering occurs in spring and is followed by fruit which are woody capsules, {{convert|5.5-7.1|mm|in|sigfig=1|abbr=on}} long.[2][3] Taxonomy and namingMelaleuca orophila was first named in 2006 by Lyndley Craven in Novon when he transferred the species from Callistemon.[4][5] The specific epithet (orophila) is from the Greek words ὄρος (óros) meaning "a mountain"[6]{{rp|537}} and φίλος (phílos) meaning “dear one" or "friend"[6]{{rp|355}} in reference to the preferred habitat of this species.[2]Callistemon teretifolius was first formally described in 1853 by botanist Ferdinand von Mueller in the journal Linnaea.[7][8]Callistemon teretifolius is regarded as a synonym of Melaleuca orophila by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.[9]Distribution and habitatMelaleuca orophila occurs mainly in the Flinders Ranges, especially between Williamstown and Mount Crawford.[3] It grows in mallee and woodland in rocky situations.[2]ConservationMelaleuca orophila is classified as "vulnerable" by the Government of South Australia Department for Environment and Heritage.[3]References1. ^{{cite journal|last1=Udovicic|first1=Frank|last2=Spencer|first2=Roger|title=New combinations in Callistemon (Myrtaceae)|journal=Muelleria|date=2012|volume=30|issue=1|pages=23–25|url=http://www.rbg.vic.gov.au/documents/Muelleria_30-1_3_Udovicic_Spencer.pdf|accessdate=11 June 2015}} {{Taxonbar|from=Q5022793}}2. ^1 2 3 4 {{cite book|last1=Brophy|first1=Joseph J.|last2=Craven|first2=Lyndley A.|last3=Doran|first3=John C.|title=Melaleucas : their botany, essential oils and uses|date=2013|publisher=Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research|location=Canberra|isbn=9781922137517|page=260}} 3. ^1 2 3 {{cite web|title=Callistemon teretifolius|url=http://www.naturalresources.sa.gov.au/files/sharedassets/public/plants_and_animals/threatened_plants/pa-fact-pafactcallistemonteretifolius.pdf|publisher=Government of South Australia Department for Environment and Heritage|accessdate=15 July 2015}} 4. ^{{cite web|title=Melaleuca orophila|url= https://biodiversity.org.au/boa/instance/apni/613695|publisher=APNI|accessdate=15 July 2015}} 5. ^{{cite journal|last1=Craven|first1=Lyn A.|title=New Combinations in Melaleuca for Australian Species of Callistemon (Myrtaceae)|journal=Novon|date=2006|volume=16|issue=4|page=472|url=http://www.bioone.org/doi/abs/10.3417/1055-3177%282006%2916%5B468%3ANCIMFA%5D2.0.CO%3B2|accessdate=15 July 2015|doi=10.3417/1055-3177(2006)16[468:NCIMFA]2.0.CO;2}} 6. ^1 {{cite book|last1=Brown|first1=Roland Wilbur|title=The Composition of Scientific Words|date=1956|publisher=Smithsonian Institution Press|location=Washington, D.C.}} 7. ^{{cite web|title=Callistemon teretifolius|url= https://biodiversity.org.au/boa/instance/apni/523157|publisher=APNI|accessdate=21 July 2015}} 8. ^{{cite journal|last1=von Mueller|first1=Ferdinand|title=Diagnoses et descriptiones plantarum novarum, quas in Nova Hollandia|journal=Linnaea|date=1853|volume=25|pages=387–388|url=https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/item/109556#page/393/mode/1up|accessdate=21 July 2015}} 9. ^{{WCSP | 31512 | Callistemon teretifolius }} 4 : Melaleuca|Flora of South Australia|Plants described in 2006|Taxa named by Lyndley Craven |
