It is {{convert|147|km|mi}} long, and its drainage basin covers {{convert|2120|km2|mi2}}. The river's source is at the village {{ill|Novy Menzelyabash|ru|Новый Мензелябаш}}, Sarmanovsky District, Tatarstan. Major tributaries are the {{ill|Kholodnaya River (Tatarstan)|lt=Kholodnaya|ru|Холодная (приток Мензели)}}, {{ill|Kamyshly River (Sarmanovsky District, Tatarstan)|lt=Kamyshly|ru|Камышлы (приток Мензели)}}, {{ill|Iganya River|lt=Iganya|ru|Иганя}}, {{ill|Urguda River|lt=Urguda|ru|Ургуда (река)}} rivers. The maximal mineralization is 400-800 mg/l. The average sediment deposition at the river mouth per year reaches {{convert|100|mm|in}}. The maximal discharge is {{convert|215|m3/s|cuft/s}}. Drainage is regulated. Since 1978 it is protected as a natural monument of Tatarstan.[1] The town of Menzelinsk is located near the river's mouth.
