Michael Sturla (born February 18, 1956) is a Democratic member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. He has represented the 96th District in Lancaster County, including the city of Lancaster, since 1991. Sturla is currently serving as House Democratic Policy Committee Chairman. For most of his tenure in the legislature, he has been the only Democrat representing a significant portion of Lancaster County at the state or federal level. BiographySturla graduated from the University of Kansas in 1979 with a degree in environmental design. After college, he founded a painting and construction firm with his brother and later founded Aarchitrave, an architecture firm. He was elected to the Lancaster City Council in 1987 and served on the Council until his election to the House. In August 2011, Sturla stirred controversy with written remarks he made about proposed drilling in the Marcellus Shale regions of Pennsylvania. He wrote that increased drilling would lead to the "spread of sexually transmitted disease amongst the womenfolk."[2] Sturla apologized for his "insensitive" remarks, but defended himself by saying that his comments were based on a report to the Marcellus Shale Advisory Commission.[3] Mike Sturla endorsed Tom Wolf in the 2014 Democratic Primary for Governor.[4] References1. ^{{cite web |title = SESSION OF 1991 - 175TH OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY - No. 1|work = Legislative Journal| publisher = Pennsylvania House of Representatives |date = 1991-01-01|url = http://www.legis.state.pa.us/WU01/LI/HJ/1991/0/19910101.pdf}} 2. ^{{Cite web | title = Pa. lawmaker suggests spread of STDs 'amongst womenfolk' a side effect of natural gas drilling | url = http://www.pennlive.com/midstate/index.ssf/2011/08/pa_lawmaker_suggests_spread_of.html | publisher = Associated Press | date = August 17, 2011}} 3. ^{{cite web | title = Lawmaker defends comments pinning higher rates of STDs on gas drillers | url = http://www.witf.org/state-house-sound-bites/lawmaker-defends-comments-tying-drilling-workers-to-higher-rates-of-stds | date = 17 August 2011 }} 4. ^http://wolfforpa.com/sections/press-releases/wolf-electeds-endorsements External links
