Lines

Minami-Wakkanai Station is served by the {{Convert|259.4|km|abbr=on}} Soya Main Line from {{STN|Asahikawa}} to {{STN|Wakkanai}}, and lies 256.7 km from the starting point of the line at Asahikawa.[1] The station is numbered "W79".

History

The station opened on 25 June 1924, initially named {{Nihongo|Wakkanai Station|稚内駅}}.[1] It was renamed Minami-Wakkanai on 1 February 1939 at the same time as the former {{Nihongo|Wakkanai Minato Station|稚内港駅||lit. "Wakkanai Port Station"}} was renamed Wakkanai Station.[1]

With the privatization of Japanese National Railways (JNR) on 1 April 1987, the station came under the control of JR Hokkaido.[1]
