The method of election was the single transferable vote form of proportional representation (PR-STV). History and boundariesThe constituency was created under the Electoral (Amendment) Act 1947 for the 1948 general election. It succeeded the constituency of Limerick, which was divided between Limerick East and Limerick West. It encompassed the whole of Limerick City Council, together with the Castleconnell electoral area and part of the Bruff electoral area of Limerick County Council and the Ballyglass electoral area of Clare County Council. It was primarily an urban constituency but had a large rural hinterland, and contained small parts of County Clare.[1] The constituency elected 4 deputies (Teachtaí Dála, commonly known as TDs) from 1948 to 1981, and 5 deputies from 1981 to 2011. While support for left-wing parties has usually been strong in the city of Limerick, the constituency as a whole was long considered a stronghold of the Progressive Democrats (PD), supplying at least one PD TD in all general elections from 1987 until 2007. The Constituency Commission published its final recommendations on 23 October 2007. As a result of population decline, Limerick East was replaced by a 4-seat constituency called Limerick City.[2] Most of the rural parts of Limerick East were transferred to the new Limerick constituency.[3] TDs{{Irish TD table begin|constituency = Limerick East |maxTDs = 5 |start = 1948 |end = 2011 |refs =[4] |Democratic Socialist Party (Ireland) |Fianna Fáil |Fine Gael |Independent (politician) |Labour Party (Ireland) |Progressive Democrats }}{{Irish TD table Dáil |dailnum = 13 |refs =[5] }}{{Irish TD table TD with party link |name = Michael Keyes |elections = 4 |party = Labour Party (Ireland) }}{{Irish TD table TD with party link |name = Robert Ryan |elections = 1 |party = Fianna Fáil }}{{Irish TD table TD with party link |name = James Reidy |elections = 3 |party = Fine Gael }}{{Irish TD table TD with party link |name = Daniel Bourke |elections = 2 |party = Fianna Fáil }}{{Irish TD table seats dropped |seats = 1 |elections = 11 |comment = 4 seats 1948–1981 }}{{Irish TD table Dáil |dailnum = 14 |byelections = 1 |refs =[6] }}{{Irish TD table TD with party link |name = Tadhg Crowley |elections = 3 |party = Fianna Fáil }}{{Irish TD table by-election |constituency = Limerick East |year = 1952 |refs =[7] }}{{Irish TD table TD with party link |name = John Carew |elections = 3 |party = Fine Gael }}{{Irish TD table Dáil |dailnum = 15 |refs =[8] }}{{Irish TD table TD with party link |name = Donogh O'Malley |elections = 4 |party = Fianna Fáil }}{{Irish TD table Dáil |dailnum = 16 |refs =[9] }}{{Irish TD table TD with party link |name = Ted Russell |elections = 1 |party = Independent (politician) }}{{Irish TD table TD with party link |name = Paddy Clohessy |elections = 4 |party = Fianna Fáil }}{{Irish TD table Dáil |dailnum = 17 |refs =[10] }}{{Irish TD table TD with party link |name = Stephen Coughlan |elections = 5 |party = Labour Party (Ireland) }}{{Irish TD table TD with party link |name = Tom O'Donnell |elections = 9 |party = Fine Gael }}{{Irish TD table Dáil |dailnum = 18 |byelections = 1 |refs =[11] }}{{Irish TD table by-election |constituency = Limerick East |year = 1968 |refs =[12] }}{{Irish TD table TD with party link |name = Desmond O'Malley |elections = 7 |party = Fianna Fáil }}{{Irish TD table Dáil |dailnum = 19 |refs =[13] }}{{Irish TD table TD with party link |name = Michael Herbert |elections = 3 |party = Fianna Fáil }}{{Irish TD table Dáil |dailnum = 20 |refs =[14] }}{{Irish TD table Dáil |dailnum = 21 |refs =[15] }}{{Irish TD table TD with party link |name = Michael Lipper |elections = 1 |party = Independent (politician) }}{{Irish TD table Dáil |dailnum = 22 |refs =[16] }}{{Irish TD table TD with party link |name = Jim Kemmy |elections = 1 |party = Independent (politician) }}{{Irish TD table TD with party link |name = Peadar Clohessy |elections = 1 |party = Fianna Fáil }}{{Irish TD table TD with party link |name = Michael Noonan |elections = 10 |party = Fine Gael }}{{Irish TD table Dáil |dailnum = 23 |refs =[17] }}{{Irish TD table TD with party link |name = Jim Kemmy |elections = 1 |party = Democratic Socialist Party (Ireland) }}{{Irish TD table TD with party link |name = Willie O'Dea |elections = 9 |party = Fianna Fáil }}{{Irish TD table Dáil |dailnum = 24 |refs =[18] }}{{Irish TD table TD with party link |name = Frank Prendergast |elections = 1 |party = Labour Party (Ireland) }}{{Irish TD table Dáil |dailnum = 25 |refs =[19] }}{{Irish TD table TD with party link |name = Jim Kemmy |elections = 2 |party = Democratic Socialist Party (Ireland) }}{{Irish TD table TD with party link |name = Peadar Clohessy |elections = 3 |party = Progressive Democrats }}{{Irish TD table TD with party link |name = Desmond O'Malley |elections = 5 |party = Progressive Democrats }}{{Irish TD table Dáil |dailnum = 26 |refs =[20] }}{{Irish TD table Dáil |dailnum = 27 |refs =[21] }}{{Irish TD table TD with party link |name = Jim Kemmy |elections = 2 |party = Labour Party (Ireland) }}{{Irish TD table Dáil |dailnum = 28 |byelections = 1 |refs =[22] }}{{Irish TD table TD with party link |name = Eddie Wade |elections = 2 |party = Fianna Fáil }}{{Irish TD table by-election |constituency = Limerick East |year = 1998 |refs =[23] }}{{Irish TD table TD with party link |name = Jan O'Sullivan |elections = 3 |party = Labour Party (Ireland) }}{{Irish TD table Dáil |dailnum = 29 |refs =[24] }}{{Irish TD table TD with party link |name = Peter Power |elections = 2 |party = Fianna Fáil }}{{Irish TD table TD with party link |name = Tim O'Malley |elections = 1 |party = Progressive Democrats }}{{Irish TD table Dáil |dailnum = 30 |refs =[25] }}{{Irish TD table TD with party link |name = Kieran O'Donnell |elections = 1 |party = Fine Gael }}{{Irish TD table end |dailnum = 31 |maxTDs = 5 |comment = Constituency abolished.
